After making headlines across the world by bringing Lewis Hamilton on board last year, Ferrari could be breaking the internet once again with reports suggesting that they could be signing Mercedes’ George Russell in the near future.
Russell is believed to have signed a new deal with Mercedes after extended negotiations which will keep him at ‘Silver Arrows’ till 2027 – depending on his performance in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Italian outlet Corriere della Sera, however, reports that Ferrari could be making a move for Russell sooner rather than later. It adds that the management at Maranello is impressed with the 27-year-old British F1 star, who currently is fourth in the driver’s standings after his victories in the Canadian and Singapore Grands Prix this season.
Russell’s move to Ferrari dependent on multiple factors
Such a landmark deal, however, is dependent on multiple factors, including the possibility of Mercedes signing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, winner of the driver’s title for the last four consecutive years, which has made his future with the Brackley-based outfit uncertain.
Ferrari’s interest in Russell also comes at a time when they face the possibility of losing both of their drivers – Hamilton and Charles Leclerc – in the coming days.
Leclerc reportedly might consider an exit if the Ferrari aren’t able to get themselves back into title contention, with the ‘Prancing Horse’ having won the last of their Driver’s and Constructors’ championships in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Hamilton, on the other hand, has had a torrid run since his blockbuster move to Ferrari, with the seven-time world champion having not secured a single podium finish or a pole in 20 races this season and currently finding himself at the sixth spot on the driver’s standings with 146 points.
And unless the 42-year-old Briton, who had been knighted nearly four years ago, is able to turn things around dramatically in the last four races of the season, Ferrari are unlikely to retain Hamilton for next year.
