Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus LIVE: World champion Gukesh Dommaraju will be aiming to collect his first victory in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour on Day 2 of the event in Weissenhaus. Gukesh currently is tied on two points with world No 1 Magnus Carlsen, No 2 Hikaru Nakamura and German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer.
It was a mixed start to the lucrative tour, which is being played in the Freestyle a.k.a. Fischer Random format, for the 18-year-old Indian GM. Gukesh began the day with a 96-move draw against Nodirbek Abdusattorov before suffering a 27-move defeat against Iranian-French GM Alireza Firouzja. Gukesh, however, avoided ending up on the losing side in the remainder of the day by collecting a hat-trick of draws.
World No 4 Fabiano Caruana ended the day in joint-lead with Uzbekistani GM Javokhir Sindarov, who had been included in the lineup as a replacement for Indian legend Viswanathan Anand. Caruana and Sindarov ended the day with 4.5 points out of five while Firouzja was in the third place with 3.5 points.
It was also a mixed day for five-time world champion Carlsen, who began the day with a convincing victory over Nakamura in the main event of the day. Carlsen would respond in style to a loss against Caruana with a commanding victory over Keymer. The Norwegian, however, would end up suffering rare back-to-back losses against Vladimir Fedoseev and Sindarov to slip to the fifth spot on the table.
