Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus Day 5 LIVE: The opening event of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort enters its business end with the semi-finals set to get underway on Tuesday. Sadly for Indian fans, Gukesh Dommaraju will not be semi-finals and the final.
Gukesh has endured his worst outing at the ongoing event since being crowned world champion in Singapore in December. After finishing runner-up at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament for the second consecutive year, losing to fellow Indian chess star Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in the tie-breaks, Gukesh ended up bowing out of the Weissenhaus event in the quarter-finals without a single win.
Gukesh, however, can still fly out of Germany on a somewhat happy note if he is able to register a win in the 5th-8th classification play off that will be taking place at the same time as the semi-finals and the final.
The 18-year-old had finished in the Round-Robin stage with seven draws and two defeats, losing his last game against world No 1 Magnus Carlsen. He would then suffer back-to-back losses against American GM Fabiano Caruana in quarter-finals to finish a tournament winless.
While Gukesh resigned in 40 moves in Game 1 after a blunder in his 25th move, the second game of the quarter-finals ended even more quickly – with the Chennai lad raising the white flag in just 18 moves, resulting in a rout for Caruana.
In the other quarter-finals, Magnus Carlsen knocked Nodirbek Abdusattorov out 2-0 while Javokhir Sindarov – who was included as a replacement for Viswanathan Anand – continued his fairytale run by defeating American GM Hikaru Nakamura 2.5-1.5. Also failing to reach the semis was Alireza Firouzja, who lost to German GM Vincent Keymer 0.5-1.5 despiting finishing on top of the standings at the end of the group stage.
