Spanish police said Friday they have arrested six people as part of their probe into a suspected case of match-fixing in a Copa del Rey game from December 2021. Those arrested are suspected of winning around 30,000 euros ($32,000) through bets on the match, which the then La Liga side Levante won 8-0 against fifth-tier minnows Huracan Melilla, police said in a statement. The arrests came a day after a regional court in Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla said it had questioned six people, including a former Huracan Melilla player, over the affair. Police said they had opened their investigations after receiving complaints from Spain’s top division La Liga and several betting houses. The investigation was carried out with the help of La Liga, Spain’s football federation RFEF, LaLiga and the Betting Market Global Investigation Service (SIGMA), the police statement added. Huracan Melilla said in a statement on Thursday that they would cooperate with football authorities and the justice system and “do everything necessary to fight against fraud.” “We want to make clear that if any active member of the club is involved…disciplinary and judicial actions will be taken immediately,” it added.
