Ruben Amorim admitted that Manchester United have a “lot of problems” after the Red Devils salvaged a 2-2 draw against Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday.

Bryan Mbeumo’s header handed United the lead just after the half-hour mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The hosts though made a stunning comeback late in the game as substitutes Mathys Tel and Richarlison both scored within seven minutes to push Tottenham ahead in the injury time. Matthijs de Ligt became the rescue man for Amorim as he helped United draw level in the sixth minute of added time.

Overdependence on Casemiro?

Amorim had taken Casemiro and Harry Maguire off with less than 20 minutes left on the clock and that created a big hole in the defence on which the Spurs cashed in. The late de Ligt goal, however, helped the Red Devils extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five games. Amorim conceded that despite improvement a lot remains to be done.

“We have a lot of problems,” said Amorim after the draw. “We are just in the beginning. I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving, but we have a lot to do.”

United, who could have gone to the second spot had they held on to their lead, also lost Benjamin Sesko to injury with 10 minutes left in the game. Amorim rued the misses but also praised the team for bouncing back.

“You can divide the game in the final 10 minutes, also when we have to take out Harry Maguire and Casemiro at the same time, then suffer two goals, then losing [Sesko], even before the second goal with a big opportunity.

“To play with 10 men, but then to overcome everything and to manage to score, is a good thing, but if you look at the rest of the game, we were comfortable,” he said.

The head coach from Portugal believed United should have gone home with all three points and he wants his side to be more aggressive.

“I think we should do better, be more aggressive, feeling the environment in the stadium,” he said. “The three points were there, the space was there, and I think we felt too comfortable during the game, and we need to expect that in one play anything can happen and change the mood of the stadium, and today was that. We controlled the game well, but we need to do better, because the game was there for the taking.”

The draw kept United and Tottenham level on 18 points in the Premier League after 11 games each.
