The joy of Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Southampton at the Old Trafford turned out to be short-lived as the ‘Red Devils’ suffered a defeat by a similar margin against Brighton at home on Sunday. The shocking defeat led to infuriated manager Ruben Amorim labeling the current team as the “worst” in the club’s storied legacy.

Amorim has had a mixed run since he took over as United manager in November from Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had served as the caretaker boss after Erik ten Hag was sacked from the job. United had suffered four consecutive defeats towards the end of December and Sunday’s loss was their sixth in 11 Premier League games.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” Amorim said after his side’s wretched display at Old Trafford.

“I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

The 20-time English top-flight champions are currently languishing at the 13th spot on the table after briefly moving to 12th following their victory over Southampton, though they are a long way off from having to fight for Premier League survival.

Bruno Fernandes had briefly ignited hopes of another comeback from a goal down after scoring the equaliser for the home team with a penalty after Yankuba Minteh put Brighton in the lead in the fifth minute.

However, Kaoru Mitoma’s strike at the hour mark restored the away team’s lead before Georginio Rutter’s goal 16 minutes later put the Seagulls in the driving seat.

United have now lost six out of 12 home games this season and have suffered 10 defeats in 22 games overall – the earliest they’ve hit the double-digit mark in terms of losses in the top division since 1989-90.

“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that,” Amorim said.

Amorim, however, refused to deviate from his philosophy of a 3-4-3 formation, which doesn’t appear to be working too well with the current United squad.

“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now,” Amorim said.

United’s latest defeat came on the day the club paid tribute to Denis Law, who passed away at the age of 84 on Friday. Fans laid scarves and flowers at the statue of the legendary striker that stands next to those of Bobby Charlton and George Best, forming United’s ‘Holy Trinity’, outside the Old Trafford Stadium. A minute’s applause was observed ahead of Sunday’s kick-off.
