'Pele transformed football into an art': Messi, Neymar and football world mourn death of Brazil icon

Pele, one of the greatest and most loved footballers of all time, passed away at the age of 82 on Thursday. The news was confirmed by his family. “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace,” daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram. Pele won the FIFA World Cup thrice with Brazil — 1958, 1962, and 1970 — and was named the athlete of the century by the International Olympic Committee in 1999. Pele scored more than 1,000 goals in his career which ended in 1977. The legendary footballer was fighting kidney problems and colon cancer. Pele’s death has led to an emotional outpouring by the international football community. Here’s how the football community has reacted to the passing away of one of its greatest. “Before Pele, ‘10’ was just a number. I would say that before Pele, football was just a sport. He transformed football into an art, into entertainment.” – Brazilian compatriot and current star Neymar.

“My friend of so many victories, titles and shared stories. He leaves an eternal, unforgettable legacy. The person who stopped the world several times.” – Mario Zagallo, 91, a Brazil teammate in the 1958 and 1962 World Cup-winning teams. “The king of football has left us but his legacy will never be forgotten. RIP KING.” – French international forward Kylian Mbappe.

“Few Brazilians have taken our country’s name as far as he did… He didn’t just play. He put on an all-out show. Thank you, Pele.” – Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Eu tive o privilégio que os brasileiros mais jovens não tiveram: eu vi o Pelé jogar, ao vivo, no Pacaembu e Morumbi. Jogar, não. Eu vi o Pelé dar show. Porque quando pegava na bola ele sempre fazia algo especial, que muitas vezes acabava em gol.
