Wolves manager Rob Edwards has finally spoken about the growing rumours linking midfielder Joao Gomes with a move to Manchester United. The Brazilian star has been one of Wolves’ best players since joining from Flamengo in early 2023, and reports suggest that United are interested in signing him.
According to reports, the 24-year-old could cost around £44 million (Rs 514 crore approx), especially if Wolves struggle to stay in the Premier League this season. When Edwards was asked about the transfer talk, he insisted that there has been no official approach from United so far, but admitted to speaking to Gomes.
“We’ve spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I’m not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week,” Edwards said before their match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Matheus Cunha compares Gomes with Casemiro
United player Matheus Cunha has already spoken highly of the Brazilian midfielder. Cunha said Gomes has the talent to reach the same level as Casemiro one day. “He is a bit older now but I put Casemiro’s name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive. I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that.”
United may also explore cheaper options to avoid overspending. According to Express Sport, the club could offer Wolves a swap deal instead of paying the full transfer fee. Tyrell Malacia, Ayden Heaven, and Chido Obi are the three players who United might make part of a potential swap package, as per the piece.
However, Wolves may only consider a swap if they feel the deal will strengthen their squad and help them better prepare for next season. Meanwhile, adding Gomes would bring a much-needed boost to the midfield for United, especially with Casemiro’s long-term future still uncertain.
Gomes has made 104 appearances for the Wolves since arriving at the club two years back. In these matches, he has scored seven goals and provided four assists. His move to England also earned him recognition at the international level, with the 24-year-old being capped 10 times for Brazil during that period.
