Amorim makes 'no excuses' after Man United are booed off field for draw vs Wolves: 'We didn't use that excuse against Newcastle '

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United were booed off the field on Tuesday as the Red Devils failed to beat a struggling Wolves at Old Trafford in the English Premier League. Wolves have not won in the league since April 2025 and have had just two points in 18 matches this season before visiting Manchester.

But the team from the bottom of the table managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Amorim’s Man United after Ladislav Krejčí cancelled Joshua Zirkzee’s opener in the 45th minute. Man United could have moved to fifth in the EPL table, overtaking Chelsea with a win over Wolves, but they stay in the sixth spot for now.

Man United booed off field, but Amorim makes ’no excuses’

Man United fans were heavily disappointed with the result going into the New Year, as they booed their team off the field. Meanwhile, Amorim admitted that he can’t use the injuries and AFCON as an excuse for the poor result.

“We didn’t use that excuse against Newcastle and we are not going to use today, but of course, if you see the game, I understand why we play the way we play today, the lack of fluidity, lack of one against one,” Amorim said. “We knew that it would be a completely different game compared to Newcastle because in Newcastle, we have more space to play.

“We didn’t have to work the play so much and today we have difficulties in that aspect and that is clear.”

United were missing captain Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Noussair Mazraoui, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.

Man United had won their last match against Newcastle 1-0 with the Red Devils using four defenders at the back, but Amorim reverted to his preferred 3-4-3 system against Wolves.

Explaining the change, Amorim said: “We knew that they [Wolves] will play with the five. They will use the width. And today was just to do that and then sometimes building up with [Patrick Dorgu] open or close with Luke Shaw doing the opposite.

“So we try to arrange the right situations for the situation that we have in the moment. I think we are in one situation that you have a lot of players out in the same time.

“Of course, when you play Casemiro and [Manuel] Ugarte in the middle, you know that is different when you have Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount or Bruno, that is normal.

“So we just need to recover our players, the players from AFCON to return, and then the fluidity is going to be different.”

Manchester United would play their first match in 2026 at Leeds on 4 January.
