Manchester City are set to deal a big blow to neighbours Manchester United as they are in advanced talks with Bournemouth to sign the winger Antoine Semenyo in the January transfer window, the BBC reports. Man United have been actively chasing the England-born Ghana footballer Semenyo, but they seem to have missed the bus.

According to the report, Manchester City have made rapid progress in the negotiations with Bournemouth and are in a prime position to land Semenyo in January. The 25-year-old Semenyo have been one of the best players in the ongoing English Premier League season, scoring six goals and making three assists in 16 games.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Why Man City want Semenyo?

Semenyo has a £65 million release clause and while Bournemouth may want to hold onto the winger, they may not be able to do much if the clause is activated. Semenyo is a versatile footballer who can play on either wing and as a striker.

He is known for his pace, strength and trickery.

Signing Semenyo would be a big boost for Man City, who are aiming to reclaim the Premier League title. They are currently two points behind league leaders Arsenal on 37 points from 17 matches.

Why did Man United not go for Semenyo?

United, who are seventh with 26 points but not very far from the top four, were also looking to add Semenyo to their squad to strengthen the revival under manager Ruben Amorim. But reportedly their interest has scaled down since City made progress. Man United now expect Semenyo to join Man City and would want to focus on some other players.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham were also interested in signing Semenyo. The BBC says Chelsea are undecided, while Tottenham have not been pushing hard.

Livrpool though, can still make another push for Semenyo after the ankle injury suffered by Alexander Isak in the game vs Spurs.
