Unperturbed by Manchester United’s FA Cup exit, manager Ruben Amorim has said that winning the Premier League is the top priority for the team. He also singled out three players who he feels are “improving” at the club as the Portuguese manager struggles to get the best out of his team amid multiple fallouts.
Manchester United exited the FA Cup after losing to Fulham in the penalties at the Old Trafford. Calvin Bassey scored the first goal for Fulham before Bruno Fernandes equalised. Eventually, a penalty shootout was needed in the 5th round match, which Fulham won 4-3.
Amorim lays blame on player quality for poor attacking
Asked why Man United are struggling to create chances, Amorim said: “I think it’s sometimes the quality of the players. Bruno, also Casemiro, Josh (Joshua Zirkzee) is improving a lot the connection, he’s fighting for every ball, he’s running all the pitch so it’s the quality of the players that help us to create more chances.”
The Only trophy possible for United this season is now in the Europa League, where they face Real Sociedad in the last 16.
Amorim’s main aim is Premier League trophy
Amorim, however, said that he is focussed on helping the team win the Premier League. They last won the EPL title in 2013.
“The goal is to win the Premier League, so I know that we are losing games and losing trophies during this season but the goal is to win the Premier League again,” said Amorim.
“I don’t know how long it’s going to take but that is our goal. If you think like that, we can suffer a little bit in these defeats, a lot sometimes, but we have a goal so we continue forward no matter what.”
Amorim’s vision for the Premier League, however, comes across as impractical at the moment. United have only won five out of 16 league games under the Portuguese coach.
“It’s impossible to know (how long it will take),” he added.
“But you start understanding. I think the players are better, we understand better the league, we know what to do with the squad, what is the future and we’ll see in the future.”
