One of the best goalkeepers in the world, Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), is set to spark a bidding war among two major English Premier League clubs, Manchester United and Chelsea. The Italian 26-year-old goalkeeper, Donnarumma, won the Champions League with PSG last season, but is set to leave the club now.

Donnarumma has been nominated for the Yashin Trophy , the award for best goalkeeper in the world. But as per L’Equipe, he is not a part of PSG’s matchday squad for the upcoming UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham.

Donnarumma reportedly refused to sign a new contract, with only one year left on the current deal, and this has hampered his relationship with PSG. Now PSG is looking to sell him before the end of the summer transfer window. They have already signed Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier on a five-year deal to replace Donnarumma.

Man United vs Chelsea in race to sign Donnarumma

As per Fabrizio Romano, Man United are favourites to sign Donnarumma to replace Andre Onana. According to French media RMC Sport, both United and Chelsea have approached PSG for Donnarumma.

Chelsea also want to replace error-prone Robert Sanchez as they look to clinch their first Premier League title since the 2016-17 season. They recently shipped out Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga, and there’s some extra space in the squad for a new goalkeeper.

Man United manager Ruben Amorim also recently hinted about getting a new goalkeeper to replace Onana, who committed multiple massive blunders last season.

“To hope is a strong word. We are always looking to improve the team and we have some characteristics that we would like to have,” Amorim said. “But again, it depends on the market. It depends on the sales. We’ll see, but I’m really happy and I think even when you talk about Andre, you can see the goalkeepers.

“Even Tom [Heaton] is leaner, he’s a different goalkeeper. Altay [Bayindir] did really well and Onana is going to be better like the other guys that are getting better this year.”

The RMC Sport report added that Donnarumma is looking to join a club that can guarantee him a starting spot before the 2026 World Cup and a project that suits his personal ambitions.
