Liverpool took a massive step toward clinching the Premier League title with a gritty 2-1 win over West Ham at Anfield on Sunday. The Reds won the match thanks to a late header from captain Virgil van Dijk. They are now just six points away from mathematically sealing the title, and fans are already excited about a record-equalling 20th English top-flight crown.
The match wasn’t without drama. Luis Diaz opened the scoring early for Liverpool, but a late own goal by Andy Robertson in the 86th minute gave West Ham a glimmer of hope. However, Van Dijk’s powerful header just moments later ensured Jurgen Klopp’s side walked away with all three points under their belt.
The result keeps Liverpool comfortably at the top of the table, now 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, with only six matches left in the season.
Can Liverpool win the title next weekend?
Liverpool haven’t officially sealed the title just yet but they’re almost there. Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions as early as next Sunday, depending on the results of their match against Leicester City and Arsenal’s game against Ipswich Town, both scheduled to be played on 20 April.
If Liverpool beat Leicester City away and Arsenal lose to Ipswich Town at Portman Road, the title race would be over. Alternatively, another Arsenal slip-up against Crystal Palace on 23 April could also settle the title race in Liverpool’s favour.
Meanwhile, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has made it clear that he’s not concerned about where his team wins the Premier League title, just as long as they get the job done.
“If I have to win it 15 kilometres from here… I don’t care where to win it. We know we still have to win two more games, which I have tried to come back to every single time: it has been on 32 occasions difficult enough for us,” Slot was quoted as saying on Liverpool’s official website.
“We face Leicester and everybody can talk, talk, talk, but what I saw is that for the first time in 11 games they scored two goals and got a result, so they probably have a bit more confidence going into the game now. We’ve shown in the last 32 games that there have only been two or three wins that were quite comfortable, but the rest of them were very, very, very hard work and that’s our only focus, that’s my only focus: winning a game of football,” he added.
