Lamine Yamal had a difficult night in Barcelona’s 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League despite etching his name in history. Even though the young prodigy provided an assist to make the record, he couldn’t score and got booked, which means he will now miss the next UCL match because of the accumulation of yellow cards.
Things got worse when Yamal was substituted in the second half. He looked visibly frustrated and didn’t hide his anger while walking off the pitch. His reaction didn’t go down well with many Barcelona fans, and several supporters criticised his behaviour.
Hansi Flick responds to Yamal’s reaction
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, however, chose not to make a big issue out of the youngster’s reaction. Yamal was taken off in the 89th minute and replaced by Roony Bardghji. As he walked to the bench, the teenager still looked upset and seemed to be talking to himself.
Flick later said he understood the reaction. “We changed Lamine because he was already booked and it was late in the game,” Flick explained. “If he was a bit annoyed, I fully understand and I like it. I was a player too. It’s acceptable and not a problem.”
Despite the frustrations, Yamal assisted Barcelona’s comeback by sending in the cross that Jules Kounde converted for the winning goal. Kounde had also scored earlier in the 50th minute. Yamal now has the most goal involvements by any player under 19 in Champions League history. He surpassed Kylian Mbappe’s record of 13 with 14 contributions (7 goals and 7 assists).
This was the fifth match in a row where Barcelona conceded first but still came back to win. The victory pushed them to 14th place in the league phase, only two points away from eighth. Flick said he was happy with the fight the team showed but admitted, “Sometimes it would be good to start well and score the first goal. But it is what it is.”
