Liverpool’s horrendous run in the 2025-26 Premier League season continued with the defending champions suffering a 0-3 thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday. It’s been a shocking decline for Arne Slot's side just six months after they won their second title of the Premier League era and their 20th English top-flight championship overall.
And Saturday’s lopsided defeat against Forest has left Liverpool languishing at the 11th spot on the Premier League table, their title defence seemingly over close to the Christmas break. Liverpool were off to a strong start with five consecutive wins, but have lost six of their last seven league fixtures – suffering 0-3 identical losses against Manchester City and Forest in their last two outings.

Slot, who had a dream debut season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss, accepted blame for the Reds’ stunning loss at home against Sean Dyche’s side that has left them in a state of crisis in the middle of the season. The Dutchman added that he wasn’t willing to offer any excuses despite the referee making some questionable calls during Saturday’s fixture at Anfield.
“No one wants to hear me now talking about refereeing decisions if you lose 3-0 at home to Forest. I should look at myself first and my team, but it does show you how a goal can change the momentum of a game. Before I was just waiting for us to score a goal. Afterwards we hardly created anything,” Slot was quoted by The Guardian as saying after the game.
“Of course there is a way out, especially with the quality players we have. No matter if you win or lose when you look back you are always thinking: ‘Where can we do better, where can we adjust?’ but that is something else from doubting yourself.
“I want to emphasise I am responsible for the current losses. You are responsible when you are winning but also responsible when you are losing. I can never come up with enough excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from good enough and I am responsible for that,” the dejected Liverpool boss added.

Forest, meanwhile, were in the relegation zone ahead of kickoff after collecting just two wins in their first 11 matches but have now moved to the 16th spot after their resounding triumph on Liverpool’s home turf.
The ‘Tricky Trees’ in the process, have collected back-to-back wins at Anfield for the first time since 1964, having beaten Slot’s side 1-0 at the same venue in September last year.
