After a month-long tournament, Portugal were crowned the new Euro champions on Sunday beating France on its home turf with an extra-time goal. France were the favourites before the game, but luck was on Portugal’s side. Even though the team’s talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo spent most of the match in the dugout due to an injury, Portugal sailed home with an unlikely goal by substitute Eder at the 109th minute of the game. Here’s how the players and the football community reacted to Portugal’s victory.

Midfielder André Gomes was ecstatic after the victory, he posted a tweet in Spanish, exclaiming, “Believe it! Alone, accompanied, silent or screaming. Me, you, us! We believe together!”

Football club Chelsea took the opportunity to cheer for Ricardo Carvalho, who is centre back for the Portugal national team and also was a defender for Chelsea.

Christiano Ronaldo took another opportunity to rejoice in the team’s victory.

Portugal’s renowned winger Nani dedicated the victory to the battle-wounded Ronaldo, calling him “more than just a captain”.Central defender Pepe acknowledged how intense and important the victory was for team Portugal.

Even though France had the home advantage and won their last ten games against Portugal, the team marched to their victory yesterday.

Spanish national team and Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez presented the Euro 2016 trophy to Portugal.
