D Gukesh vs Ding Liren, World Chess Championship 2024 Game 6 Preview: D Gukesh and Ding Liren will aim to break the deadlock and try and move into a lead ahead of the second ‘Rest Day’ when they face each other in Game 6 of the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Sunday. Gukesh and Ding had decided to shake hands after completing 40 moves in three hours in the fifth game on Saturday, with Gukesh making a late comeback to hold the Chinese Grandmaster to a second consecutive draw after facing the possibility of a second defeat at one point.
Despite entering the World Championship as the underdog after a poor run this year, Ding took the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster by surprise by defeating him in the opening game. Gukesh, who had become the youngest champion in Candidates history in April, bounced back with a victory in Game 3 to go level with Ding and has not conceded the lead since then.
Ding had defeated Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in the World Championship showdown in Astana, Kazakhstan last year to become the first chess world champion from China. He only got to compete in the World Championship after Magnus Carlsen decided against defending his title against 2022 Candidates winner Nepomniachtchi, bringing his decade-long reign as world champion to an end.
