D Gukesh vs Ding Liren, World Chess Championship Game 6 LIVE Updates: It’s another draw! Both players remain level on points after six games!

Looks like Gukesh has finally accepted a draw after rejecting Ding’s offer earlier in the game, with the two players shaking hands after 46 moves.

There was some late drama in store though. Ding capture of Gukesh’s pawn on f5 was followed by the latter giving the Chinese GM a check by moving his rook one square to his right to the d file, forcing his opponent to move his king to c2.

Ding then gives Gukesh a check by moving his rook to g2, evoking a similar response from the Indian. And that is the beginning of a threefold repetition – the very thing Gukesh had rejected earlier in the game – that ensures another stalemate.

Gukesh and Ding had decided to shake hands after completing 40 moves in three hours in the fifth game on Saturday, with Gukesh making a late comeback to hold the Chinese Grandmaster to a second consecutive draw after facing the possibility of a second defeat at one point.

Despite entering the World Championship as the underdog after a poor run this year, Ding took the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster by surprise by defeating him in the opening game. Gukesh, who had become the youngest champion in Candidates history in April, bounced back with a victory in Game 3 to go level with Ding and has not conceded the lead since then.

Ding had defeated Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in the World Championship showdown in Astana, Kazakhstan last year to become the first chess world champion from China. He only got to compete in the World Championship after Magnus Carlsen decided against defending his title against 2022 Candidates winner Nepomniachtchi, bringing his decade-long reign as world champion to an end.
