Viswanathan Anand was recently seen showcasing his dancing skills with Gukesh Dommaraju, R Praggnanandhaa and several other leading players while hosting Pongal breakfast at his Chennai residence. And in another video that highlights the lighter side of India’s chess stars, newly-crowned world champion Gukesh teaches five-time world champion Anand the meaning of the word “drip” and other modern lingo.

Gukesh and his mentor Anand appeared together in a hilarious advertisement for fashion e-commerce brand Myntra in which the former, dressed in flashy casuals, is getting a tattoo of the chess move “King E5” – his winning moment at the World Championship in Singapore – on his arm. Anand, sitting beside him clad in a crisp suit, enquires about Gukesh’s shining new trophy that he won after defeating Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren in Singapore last month, and what it feels like to be a world champion.

When Gukesh “allows” Anand to touch his trophy, the latter retorts by saying, “Touch? Mere paas paanch hain (I have five of those myself). Do you want to touch four more?” To which Gukesh replies, “Nice flex, sir”.

Gukesh also talks about inking one’s personal achievements, to which Anand hilariously quips, “Nahi yaar, mere dono haath bhar jaayenge (No man, both my arms will be covered if I did that).”

The 55-year-old also tries to take his 18-year-old protege’s help in decoding ‘Gen Z’ slang including “skibidi”, which he refers to as “kabaddi” or “Scooby Doo”.

And when Gukesh tells him he needs “to know pop culture”, ‘Vishy’ says he knows Michael Jackson – even going so far as to mimic the King of Pop’s iconic pose.

Gukesh has been on an extended break since winning the World Championship, attending multiple felicitation events and meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil film superstar Rajinikanth among others – and shooting hilarious advertisements with chess legend Anand.

He will return to competition at the Tata Steel Chess in Wijk aan Zee in Netherlands that gets underway on Friday.
