D Gukesh has already become rich by Rs 1.67 crore after just three matches in the World Chess Championship 2024 as we wait for a result in the world title tie. Gukesh won the third game in the 14-classical match World Chess Championship 2024 on Wednesday to level the score against Chinese Grandmaster and reigning world champion Ding Liren.
Liren won the first game in the World Chess Championship 2024 , his first in 304 days, on Monday to take a 1-0 lead before Gukesh drew the second match and won the third game as Ding lost on time . This was 18-year-old Gukesh’s first-ever win in the World Chess Championship as he aims to become the youngest world champion.
“It feels great. Last two days I was happy with my play. Today was even better. I feel good at the board. Today, I just managed to outplay my opponent which is always very nice,” Gukesh said after securing his first win .
As per the prize money rules for the World Chess Championship 2024, Gukesh is assured of taking home Rs 1.67 crore with his first win. As per the FIDE rules, each win will fetch a payer $200k (Rs 1.67 crore), and the remaining prize money from a total pool of $2.5 million (Rs 20.8 crore approximately) will be split equally between the two.
This means Liren is also set to earn $200k for his win the Round 1 of the World Chess Championship 2024.
World Chess Championship 2024 Prize Money
As per FIDE’s rules, if the Championship goes into a tie-breaker after 14 matches then the eventual winner will be awarded $1.3 million (Rs 10.83 crore approx.), while the runner-up will take home $1.2 million (Rs 10 crore approx.).
Currently, the World Chess Championship 2024 is tied at 1.5-1.5 between Liren and Gukesh after three matches. The first player to reach 7.5 points will win the world title.
