Five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen recently shared a heartwarming update about becoming a father for the first time. The Norwegian Grandmaster and his wife, Ella Victoria Carlsen, welcomed their baby boy on September 27 this year. Carlsen has been busy with his family, missing several events since then.
Carlsen shares an update on newborn son
Speaking on the Take Take Take YouTube channel, Carlsen opened up about how life has changed since the arrival of their son. He also talked about his newborn son and if taking care of him is impacting his preparation for chess matches. “You know, it’s different, of course. But I am certainly enjoying every moment of it, and I think we’re a very good team and we’re getting good help as well,” he said.
“He’s great. Yeah. What can I say? He’s two weeks old, but he’s fat and happy. There was a two-and-a-half-hour gap in the middle of the night, but apart from that, I managed to sleep well and Ella is very generous with me. Even though I’m obviously getting significantly less sleep than I was before, I’m still getting enough to get by on most days," he added.
Carlsen also revealed that he hasn’t announced his son’s name yet but will do so in due time. The Chess Esports World Cup winner was recently seen in a cute picture with his son, shared by his wife on social media. In the photo, Carlsen could be seen sleeping with the baby.
Meanwhile, the current World No. 1 began the 2025 edition of the Speed Chess Championship with a decisive victory over Jose Martinez on Tuesday, October 14. In the quarterfinal, he will face the winner of the match between Fabiano Caruana and R Praggnanandhaa, which will be played on October 30.
Carlsen is also expected to play against the reigning World Champion D Gukesh in Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown at Saint Louis Chess Club from October 25 to 30. It will also feature Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana, and will be played in rapid format.
