Freestyle Chess Semi-finals Highlights: The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2024 in Paris has entered the semi-final stages with Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura and Vincent Keymer progressing to the last four stage. The winner of the inaugural Wesissenhaus leg Keymer will take on Hikaru Nakamura after the American Grandmaster defeated Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in the quarter-finals. World No.1 Magnus Carlsen will be up against Italian-born American GM Fabiano Caruana.
Besides Erigaisi, the losing quarter-finalists were Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Nodierbek Abdusattorov and Ian Nepomniachtchi. In the 9-12th classification matches, R Praggnanandhaa defeated Vidit Gujrathi while world champion D Gukesh went down to Richard Rapport.
Praggnanandhaa will face Rapport on Friday in the ninth-place match.
The winner of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2024 Paris leg will be awarded a cash prize of $20,000.
Gukesh is the only member of the Indian contingent who had participated in the opening leg of the Freestyle Chess Tour that had taken place in Weissenhaus in northern Germany in February.
The reigning world champion had failed to win a single game in Weissenhaus but managed to beat compatriots Arjun as well as Praggnanandhaa along with Keymer – who was part of his team in the World Championship in Singapore – in the ‘City of Light’.
