Freestyle Chess Semi-finals LIVE Updates: Ian Nepomniachtchi closing in on victory against Arjun Erigaisi

The eval bar is a lopsided 5.6 in the Russian’s favour at the moment after 39 moves, with Arjun having just six minutes left on the clock compared to 20-plus for his opponent. Appears a formality for Nepo from hereon, unless the Indian GM is able to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

PS: Look at the arrangement of the pieces on the board! Quite artistic, one would reckon.

Freestyle Chess Semi-finals LIVE Updates: Gukesh continues to explain why he struggles in Freestyle chess, and heaps praise on Vincent Keymer

“I’m very glad that he’s (Vincent Keymer) doing very well in Freestyle. I think it’s partly about the confidence. He did so well in Weissenhaus. So it’s always nice to have this kind of confidence that you can again do well. I think that’s also partly what I have been struggling with that I’m not as confident in Freestyle as in the other formats.

“Even in standard chess, his general understanding is very, very good. So maybe he has some kind of special feeling where the pieces belong, stuff like that. But I think it’s mostly about confidence,” says Gukesh.

Freestyle Chess Semi-finals LIVE Updates: D Gukesh explains why he's struggling in the Freestyle format

“I think the most challenging part for me in Freestyle Chess is that everybody can calculate and see tactics. But evaluating positions correctly, that is the most challenging, at least for me. Because a lot of positions and ideas are similar to standard chess but not exactly similar. And something which we think is good might not actually be good. Our intuition is simply not all the time correct in Freestyle,” says the reigning Classical world champion, who has been struggling so far in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour.

Freestyle Chess Semi-finals Highlights: The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2024 in Paris has entered the semi-final stages with Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura and Vincent Keymer progressing to the last four stage. The winner of the inaugural Wesissenhaus leg Keymer will take on Hikaru Nakamura after the American Grandmaster defeated Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in the quarter-finals. World No.1 Magnus Carlsen will be up against Italian-born American GM Fabiano Caruana.

Besides Erigaisi, the losing quarter-finalists were Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Nodierbek Abdusattorov and Ian Nepomniachtchi. In the 9-12th classification matches, R Praggnanandhaa defeated Vidit Gujrathi while world champion D Gukesh went down to Richard Rapport.

Praggnanandhaa will face Rapport on Friday in the ninth-place match.
