Freestyle Chess Paris Leg Finals Live Updates: Magnus Carlsen goes 1-0 up in his dream showdown against Hikaru Nakamura in the 'City of Light' after winning Game 1 of the final in 36 moves while playing with white pieces. Hikaru was steering the game towards a draw until committing a blunder in what would prove to be his final move of the evening.   In the other games on Sunday, Arjun Erigaisi defeats Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in 41 moves after bossing a majority of the game to collect his third win in four games and inch closer to a fifth-place finish. And Ian Nepomniachtchi, who had lost to Arjun on Saturday, goes 1-0 up in his seventh-place battle against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

Turned out to be quite the pitched battle between the two finalists of the Weissenhaus leg and it’s Caruana – who had lost to the German Grandmaster in February – who goes 1-0 up in the third-place playoff with a victory in 66 moves! And he achieves the victory while playing with black pieces.

Freestyle Chess Paris Finals LIVE Updates: Vincent Keymer vs Fabiano Caruana touches the 60-move mark with neither player giving up just yet!

Both players have their Queen on the board along with a rook, with Fabi having the added advantage of a bishop. The latter, though, has a sizeable lead on the eval bar and gives Keymer a check with his Queen in the latest move.

Freestyle Chess Paris Finals LIVE Updates: Magnus Carlsen defeats Hikaru Nakamura in Game 1 of the final after a late blunder by the latter!

Hikaru’s decision to advance his light-squared bishop to a2 turns out to be a blunder. The American GM could have taken Carlsen’s e-file pawn via en passant and solidified his position against the white king while keeping Carlsen’s bishop and rook in check with his own bishop at e6.

Instead, he decides to advance his bishop forward, allowing Carlsen to give him a check by simply moving his bishop to f8, clearing the path between his rook and the black King.

Hikaru had been putting up a superb fight until then and was steering the game towards a draw, and in a single stroke, undid all of his hard work!

We have the first result of Day 7 in Paris, with Russian GM Nepomniachtchi defeating Nodirbek in 44 moves while playing with black pieces, bossing the second half of the game aided by a couple of blunders by the Uzbekistani GM. And he wins this contest with nearly half-an-hour left on the clock.

Quite the response from Nepo after a stunning reversal against Arjun Erigaisi in his previous game, in which he had gone 1-0 up on Friday before suffering back-to-back losses on Saturday followed by a draw.

Freestyle Chess Paris Leg Finals Live Updates: The much-anticipated clash between two modern chess legends is finally here, as Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura are set to meet in the final of the Freestyle Chess Paris after victories in their respective semi-finals on Saturday.

Carlsen, the former world champion, edged past Fabiano Caruana, while Nakamura overcame Vincent Keymer, setting up a mouth-watering title decider between the two. Caruana will play Keymer in the 3rd place playoff.

Meanwhile, Arjun Erigaisi will contest the 5th-place playoff against French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, after both players secured identical 2.5-1.5 victories over Ian Nepomniachtchi and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, respectively.

Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa wrapped up his tournament in 9th place, defeating Richard Rapport 1.5-0.5 in the classification round. D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi shared the 11th spot after losing their 9th-12th place classification games.

The winner of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2024 Paris leg will be awarded a cash prize of $200,000.

The Paris leg is the second event of the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, which got underway in February at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort.

German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer punched above his weight to win the event, beating Carlsen in the semi-finals before defeating Caruana in the final to move to the top of the Tour standings.
