Freestyle Chess Paris Finals LIVE Updates: Magnus Carlsen on D Gukesh struggling in the Freestyle format

“I think we have had three-out-of-three events which have been difficult for him, and I’m sure he will grasp things better at some point. But for the moment, it’s not close,” Carlsen says on reigning Classical world champion Gukesh struggling to make an impact in Freestyle Chess.

Freestyle Chess Paris Finals LIVE Updates: How did the Indian players fare in the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour?

It was a disappointing tournament for D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi, who finish at the bottom of the standings, as well as for R Praggnanandhaa – who settles for the ninth spot.

Arjun Erigaisi, however, kept the Indian flag flying high till the final day as he finished at the fifth spot, defeating eventual champion Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana in the round-robin stage as well as Maxime Vachier-Lagrave later in the playoffs to finish fifth. And he sure has shown the most potential among the Indians when it comes to the unpredictable format that is Freestyle Chess.

Freestyle Chess Paris Finals LIVE Updates: Magnus Carlsen opens up on what he feels is a psychological issue with Hikaru Nakamura in their head-to-head battles

“I felt that I was pushing the whole way yesterday, and had no problems whatsoever today. So it didn’t feel that even to be honest in this particular match up. I felt that overall he had some chances to hold, but overall I managed to shut him out in this match.

“Overall, Hikaru’s done really well in the Classical games, both in Weissenhaus and here. He’s definitely been among the best. But I think there is also something psychological that happens, that he feels that when he plays me, maybe he’s not pushing as hard as he is against some other people,” Carlsen says after defeating Hikaru in the final of the Freestyle Chess event in Paris.

The two players currently are on level terms with the eval bar dead even at the moment. Nepo, however, has a time advantage of more than 30 minutes over his Uzbekistani opponent at the moment, and might be looking to use that to try and collect a win.

The Russian GM is 1-0 up in any case and a draw will be sufficient for him to finish seventh.

Freestyle Chess Paris Finals LIVE Updates: Welcome to Day 2 of the finals between Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura

The highly anticipated Game 2 of the Freestyle Chess Paris finals between Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura is underway. Stay tuned as we bring you live updates and match results.

Freestyle Chess Paris Leg Finals Highlights: Magnus Carlsen has taken a 1-0 lead over Hikaru Nakamura in the Freestyle Chess Paris finals after clinching Game 1 in 36 moves with the white pieces. Nakamura appeared to be guiding the game towards a draw but faltered with a late blunder that handed the victory to Carlsen. Nakamura thus faces a do-or-die situation in Game 2 and will have to win that in order to take the final into the tie-breaks.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Fabiano Caruana beat Vincent Keymer in the 3rd-4th place playoff, while Arjun Erigaisi got the better of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the battle for fifth place. Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the 7th-8th place playoff. Like Carlsen, Caruana, Erigaisi and Nepomniachtchi are a draw away from winning their respective games.

The winner of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2024 Paris leg will be awarded a cash prize of $200,000.

The Paris leg is the second event of the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, which got underway in February at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort.

German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer punched above his weight to win the event, beating Carlsen in the semi-finals before defeating Caruana in the final to move to the top of the Tour standings.
