Freestyle Chess Paris Leg Finals Highlights: Magnus Carlsen has taken a 1-0 lead over Hikaru Nakamura in the Freestyle Chess Paris finals after clinching Game 1 in 36 moves with the white pieces. Nakamura appeared to be guiding the game towards a draw but faltered with a late blunder that handed the victory to Carlsen. Nakamura thus faces a do-or-die situation in Game 2 and will have to win that in order to take the final into the tie-breaks.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Fabiano Caruana beat Vincent Keymer in the 3rd-4th place playoff, while Arjun Erigaisi got the better of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the battle for fifth place. Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the 7th-8th place playoff. Like Carlsen, Caruana, Erigaisi and Nepomniachtchi are a draw away from winning their respective games.
The winner of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2024 Paris leg will be awarded a cash prize of $200,000.
The Paris leg is the second event of the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, which got underway in February at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort.
German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer punched above his weight to win the event, beating Carlsen in the semi-finals before defeating Caruana in the final to move to the top of the Tour standings.
