Coming years will see Maharashtra, Haryana scale new height of development, says PM Narendra Modi

Addressing party cadre from the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that even before Diwali, the people of Maharashtra have put their faith in the BJP. He lauded Devendra Fadnavis for excelling despite being a first time chief minister, adding that he kept working for people’s welfare.

“In 2014, BJP and Shiv Sena came together after the election. It was the people’s decision. Before 2014, BJP was always a junior party of the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. For 50 years, no CM was able to serve the people for a full five-year term. Devendra Fadnavis got the opportunity to serve for full five years. Maharashtra and especially Mumbai contribute immensely to the country’s economy. Political stability is important there,” Modi said.

“These are unprecedented victories because normally these days few governments return after five years. In such times to be elected again is a big deal. The coming five years will see both the states scale new heights of development,” he said.

“I have seen that policies and schemes are better implemented in states where there is a BJP government. Other parties waste time in changing names of schemes,” Modi further said.

Amit Shah addresses party cadre at BJP headquarters in Delhi

Addressing party cadre from the BJP headquarters in Delhi, union minister Amit Shah said that the Mahayuti alliance will form the government once again with majority.

“In five months, the Modi 2.0 government has done as much work as many have not been able to do in even five years. We passed the Triple Talaq law that was stuck for years and opened doors to development in Kashmir by revoking Articles 370 and 35A,” Shah said, acknowledging that Maharashtra has not been the party’s stronghold.

“Our governments in Maharashtra and Haryana delivered for the people in the last five years. BJP delivered corruption-free governments in the state. Under Modi 2.0, BJP has started by winning two Assembly election,” he said congratulating Devendra Fadnavis.

Even as counting continue, the people’ mandate seems to go against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ prediction about the state’s legislative assembly having a Leader of Opposition from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA).

At a rally in Nanded earlier this month, Fadnavis had said that the Congress and NCP will not be able to get even 10 percent of seats and that Prakash Ambedkar’s party will stake claim to the post of the Leader of Opposition.

“The Assembly elections in Maharashtra will throw a new political permutation and combination. The opposition leader will be from the VBA. The Congress and NCP will not get even 10 percent seats to qualify for the post,” Fadnavis had said, while denying that the saffron party had an understanding with the VBA.

However, as per 4 pm figures, the VBA has not won in any seat and is leading in only one, while the Congress and NCP have together won 23 seats and are leading in 76 seats.

The BJP has won in 19 seats so far and the Shiv Sena in 14. The former is leading in 80 seats and the latter in 43.

BJP paid the price of neglecting Marathwada, Vidarbha’s farm crisis

In Vidarbha and, to an extent, Marathwada, the BJP has been at the receiving end of farmers’ anger, although it has not been enough to dislodge it from power. If there was one single government policy that got it the ire of farmers, it was the loan waiver. Delays and uncertainty over its implementation had left many farmers in the lurch. Another reason for farmers’ anger may have been the failure to ensure remunerative prices for crops like cotton, soya bean and moong.

BJP must read writing on the wall: Not just Haryana, poorer performance in Maharashtra also spells trouble

As the picture becomes clearer, it is evident now that the BJP has done much worse than was expected, and the voters have sent a strong message to India’s dominant national party. In Maharashtra, former Maharashtra strongman Gopinath Munde’s daughter and a minister in Devendra Fadnavis government, Pankaja Munde lost from her constituency in Parli. The party has also suffered major losses in Vidarbha region and consequently its target of crossing 164 on its own fell well short. It will form the government, still, with Shiv Sena but obviously the fact that it barely crossed the halfway mark along with its ally Sena, and couldn’t reach anywhere close to its target of over 200, will take the sheen off their victory in Maharashtra.

In Haryana, the picture is more grim for the BJP as consolidation of Jat votes in favour of Dushyant Chautala’s JJP has meant the party has fallen short of halfway mark, and of things doesn’t go its way, then it may find itself sitting on sidelines despite being single largest party. There will be time for detailed analysis, but straight off the cuff, it seems that voters have sent a strong message to the BJP.

Maharashtra Election Result 2019 Counting and Updates: Addressing party cadre from the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that even before Diwali, the people of Maharashtra have put their faith in the BJP. He lauded Devendra Fadnavis for excelling despite being a first time chief minister, adding that he kept working for people’s welfare. Meanwhile, in separate press conferences, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray thanked the people of Maharashtra following the Mahayuti alliance’s performance in the polls. While Thackeray reminded BJP of the 50-50 alliance formula that was decided before the Lok Sabha polls, Fadnavis said that 15 Independent candidates are in touch with him. He added that those who had defected from the party want to now come back into its fold. Even though the Shiv Sena is leading in barely half of the seats as compared to BJP, Sena leaders have said their end goal remains that of establishing a Sena chief minister. Speaking to News18, a Shiv Sena leader said that basis the final count of their seats in the Assembly, they will push for Aaditya Thackeray as chief minister, insisting that Fadnavis should be given a role at the Centre as per his stature. NCP chief Sharad Pawar at a press conference: People of Maharashtra have rejected BJP’s slogan of ‘Abki Baar, 200 paar’. The party humbly accepts the mandate by the people. NCP-Congress workers supported each other. Members of the Munde family are locked in a bitter battle in Parle constituency in Beed district. Dhananjay Munde has consolidated a 14,000-strong lead against cousin Pankaja, who is the daughter of BJP leader late Gopinath Munde. Saffron partners BJP and Shiv Sena, who won most seats in Vidarbha in 2014, seem to be hit by a drop in vote share in the region this time around. According to early trends that came in after vote counting began on Thursday, the BJP and Shiv Sena are down 20 and two seats respectively, from the tally in 2014. This outcome in the tribal-dominated region, which has been suffering severe agrarian distress, points to the electorate’s disappointment with the government’s failure to follow through on election promises in 2014. Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil leads in Shirdi Assembly seat by 4,844 votes over his nearest Congress rival Suresh Thorat. Patil is the minister of housing in the state of Maharashtra and had joined the BJP before Lok Sabha polls after resigning from the Congress. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis consolidates lead in Nagpur South West. He is leading with 7493 votes in Nagpur South West constituency.
