Gujarat will remain BJP stronghold, says Rupani

Hailing the “unprecedented” victory of the party, chief minister Rupani said the BJP has won convincingly in the entire state, be it the tribal belt, Saurasthra or in Central, North and South Gujarat, while the Congress has been almost wiped out. “The results of the polls have proved that Gujarat was the stronghold of the BJP…it is the stronghold of the BJP, and it will remain the stronghold of the BJP,” he said.  “The people have told the Congress party that they are not good enough to be in power and also not good enough to remain even in Opposition,” Rupani told reporters in Gandhinagar.

AAP bags 42 seats

The Aam Aadmi Party, a new entrant, has won 42 seats while Independents have bagged 286 seats till evening. Out of 8,474 seats, candidates on 237 seats remained unopposed, said the State Election Commission.

Congress’ Amit Chavda said people had raised doubts about EVMs and all these things should be probed. “The election results are totally opposite to what our
expectations were. We had received good responses from people during our campaigning but results do not reflect it. People have raised doubts on EVMs and all these things should be probed,” Chavda said.

BJP wins 70 of 81 muncipalities

The ruling BJP has won all 31 district panchayatas, 70 out of 81 municipalities, and was far ahead of its main rival Congress in the 231 taluka panchayats. The saffron party has won 6,110 out of the total 8,474 seats for which results have been declared so far. The Congress could bag only 1,768 seats and has won only three municipalities but failed to open account in any district panchayat. The Grand Old Party could win only a few taluka panchayat bodies.

Congress MLA, son face defeat

Even as the BJP surges ahead in the local bodies’ polls in Gujarat, among the losers on the Congress side were an MLA and sons of seven sitting MLAs In a major upset, Niranjan Patel, three-time Congress MLA from Petlad in Anand district, lost from ward number 2 and 5 of Petlad municipality. His son, Saurabh Patel, too lost to the BJP in the same municipality.

Vijay Parmar, son of Congress MLA Punambhai Parmar from Sojitra in Anand, lost to a BJP candidate from Moraj seat in Tarapur taluka panchayat, while the former’s nephew Nikunj Parmar also tasted defeat.

According to the Times of India, the BJP has won in 18 out of 31 district panchayats in Gujarat. These include Ahmedabad, Porbandar, Jungadh, Amreli, Navsari, Valsad, Surat, Dev Bhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Botad and Aravalli, Kutch, Rajkot, Anand, Vadodara, Tapi and Narmada.

With this, the saffron party retains the municipality for the fourth straight term. As counting of votes cast in the 28 February polls continued, the Aam Aadmi Party said in a tweet that 24 party candidates have emerged victorious so far. Counting of votes for polls to 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayat and 231 taluka panchayat will be held on Tuesday. The polling took place on Sunday with municipalities recording a voter turnout of 58.82 percent, while the figure was 65.8 for the district panchayats and 66.6 percent for taluka panchayats. The final figures were released by the State Election Commission on Monday. Re-polling was held during the day in a booth in Ghodiya in Jhalod taluka of Dahod district after two EVMs were damaged during Sunday’s polling by three people. The booth recorded around 50 percent turnout during the re-poll, officials said. Police on Monday said 17 people were arrested in Vadodara for allegedly taking custody of EVMs after polling late Sunday evening in Tarsva in Waghodia taluka. The mob had claimed the EVMs were tampered and police had to fire a round in the air and lob four teargas shells to bring the situation under control, said a Waghodia police station official. Polls were held for 8,235 out of 8,474 seats as candidates were elected unopposed on 237 seats and no forms were submitted in two, SEC officials said. For the 8,235 seats, the BJP fielded 8,161 candidates, Congress 7,778, Aam Aadmi Party 2,090, among others, said the SEC.
