Vantage | Why Trump still dominates American politics

In the fast-paced world of American politics, the spotlight is once again on Donald Trump. After securing victory in the Iowa caucuses, the former president has now triumphed in the New Hampshire primary, solidifying his position as a frontrunner for the Republican nomination. This political resurgence raises crucial questions about the upcoming presidential race, Trump’s unconventional approach and the challenges ahead.

Trump’s New Hampshire triumph The New Hampshire primary proved to be another milestone for Trump, where he faced off against his lone rival, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Despite Haley’s significant investments of time and money in the state, Trump emerged as the clear winner. The numbers speak volumes – Trump secured approximately 54.5 per cent of the votes, while Haley trailed with 43.2 per cent. This decisive victory positions Trump as the inevitable Republican nominee, leaving little room for a comeback by Haley. “And I really think this is time now for everybody, our country to come together. We want to come together. Uh, whether you’re republican or democrat or liberal or conservative, It would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world,” said Trump. While Trump revels in his victories, Nikki Haley remains undeterred. With the South Carolina primary looming in the next month, Haley sees an opportunity to turn the tide in her favour. Having served as South Carolina’s governor from 2011 to 2017, she aims to leverage her local connections and support. Haley expressed confidence, stating that the race is far from over and emphasizing her resilience as the last candidate standing against Trump. “This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go. I really like it. And the next one is my sweet state of South Carolina. At one point in this campaign, there were 14 of us running and we were at 2% in the polls. Well, I’m a fighter. And I’m scrappy. And now we’re the last one standing next to Donald Trump,” said Haley. Trump’s evolving rhetoric Trump’s speech in New Hampshire marked a departure from his call for unity in Iowa. This time, the former president embraced his unfiltered and unapologetic style, abandoning decorum. He emphasized the need for the country to come together, echoing his familiar theme of unity, regardless of political affiliations. As Trump continues to dominate American politics, questions arise about the factors fuelling his enduring appeal. Several key elements contribute to his political prowess: 1. Culture war narrative: Trump strategically engages in a “us versus them” narrative, tapping into conservative sentiments on issues such as abortion, immigration, gender rights and homosexuality. This narrative positions him as a champion against perceived villains. 2. Lack of alternatives: The absence of compelling alternatives within the Republican ranks works in Trump’s favour. Figures like Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy, once touted as potential successors, are viewed by many as mere variations of Trump, limiting the party’s diversity of options. 3. Unconventional approach: Trump’s unorthodox approach to politics is evident in his handling of legal challenges. Facing 91 charges across multiple cases, he wears them as a badge of honor, appealing to supporters who view him as a battle-hardened leader unafraid to defy conventions. 4. State of the nation: Trump capitalises on perceived shortcomings of the Biden administration, particularly in handling international conflicts and inflation. His promise to end wars resonates with voters disenchanted with the current state of affairs. “I was the only president in nearly four decades who did not get America into any new conflicts. Instead, I brought our troops and our wonderful children back home. We’re at the brink of World War III, just in case anybody doesn’t know it. As president, I will bring back peace through strength,” said Trump. Trump’s electoral prospects Despite his commanding lead in opinion polls, challenges remain for Trump in a potential rematch against President Joe Biden. Polls, as history has shown, can be unreliable indicators. Additionally, Trump struggles to attract minority voters, and the outcome may hinge on factors like the resolution of international conflicts and Biden’s appeal to women voters. “The reason women are being forced to travel across state lines for health care is Donald Trump. The reason their family members are trying to get help for them that are threatened with prosecution, it’s because of Donald Trump. And the reason their fundamental right has been stripped away is Donald Trump,” said President Biden. In the unpredictable landscape of American politics, Trump’s resurgence raises anticipation for a fierce contest, promising twists and turns as the presidential race unfolds. Whether he can maintain this momentum and emerge victorious in November remains to be seen. The battleground is set, and the clash between Trump and Biden promises to be a compelling spectacle.
