Vantage | Why sibling rivalry is good for your children

The world of rivalry is an inevitable and crucial aspect of human relationships. From countries at war to companies competing with groundbreaking inventions, rivalry has shaped history and culture. However, some of the most intriguing rivalries unfold within families, particularly between siblings.

Sibling rivalry: A fight for survival Being a sibling is described as a fight for survival where clashes between brothers and sisters can influence the dynamics of their worlds. Questions arise, such as who initiated the conflict, who is right, and who holds the coveted title of the favourite. The overarching question lingers—is it acceptable for siblings to engage in squabbles, or should they be each other’s arch-enemies? Science behind sibling rivalry Scientifically, sibling rivalry is revealed to be more than just chaotic quarrels that weary parents attempt to mitigate. Contrary to common perception, research suggests that sibling rivalry is beneficial for children. Siblings serve as essential life instructors, imparting lessons on coexistence, collaboration and emotional management including handling envy, hatred, and anger—an early, on-the-job training of sorts. Research highlights numerous advantages, asserting that sibling rivalries contribute to mental and emotional development. They increase maturity, enhance social skills like negotiation and persuasion, and provide valuable lessons in problem-solving. Rather than being a hindrance, these conflicts are deemed educational, shaping the personalities and interests of siblings. Contrary to concerns that excessive rivalry might strain relationships, research indicates that well-managed sibling rivalry strengthens the bond between siblings. Children who engage in playful teasing or conflict at home are more likely to support each other in public, showcasing a unique dynamic where siblings can be archenemies at home but allies in the outside world. Understanding sibling bonds Siblings bonds are acknowledged as complex, especially when considering the frequency of their conflicts. Sibling conflict can occur up to eight times an hour, escalating with combative tendencies, especially when siblings are of the same gender and close in age. Despite the chaos, their rivalry serves a developmental purpose called “differentiation”, helping children discover what makes them special in the eyes of their parents. Sibling rivalry, often manifested in competition, can shape personalities and interests. For example, an elder sibling excelling in cricket may lead the younger one to either avoid the sport entirely or strive to excel in a different aspect, fostering individuality and personal growth. While sibling rivalry is most intense in early and middle childhood, conflicts tend to decrease during adolescence and level off in most cases. This reduction in conflict strengthens connections well into adulthood, contributing positively to overall well-being. However, the inherent sense of competition may persist, leading to occasional playful or strategic rivalry even in adulthood. Sibling rivalry is a multifaceted phenomenon that, when managed well, can have positive effects on a child’s development. The intricate dance between siblings, balancing conflict and cooperation, contributes not only to individual growth but also to the resilience and strength of their lifelong bond. So, the next time your sibling hands you the less full drink or refuses to share a phone charger, remember—it’s just a fact of life that may lead to some entertaining memes to passively share with each other.
