In a surprising turn of events, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially withdrawn from the Republican presidential race, leaving former president Donald Trump and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley as the remaining contenders. DeSantis, often referred to as “Trump Lite,” failed to gain traction among Republican primary voters, who, it seems, prefer the original Trump brand.
DeSantis announced his exit during a press conference, emphasizing the lack of a clear path to victory. “I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don’t have a clear path to victory. Accordingly, I am today suspending my campaign. It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance. He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican Guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” said DeSantis. The departure of DeSantis leaves a two-candidate race between Trump and Haley. While Trump had previously made critical remarks about DeSantis, he now congratulates him on a well-run campaign and expresses eagerness to work together to defeat their common opponent, President Joe Biden. “Before we begin, I’d like to take time to congratulate Ron DeSantis and of course, a really terrific person who have gotten to know his wife, Casey, for having run a great campaign for president. He did. He ran a really good campaign. I will tell you, it’s not easy. I appreciate that, and I also look forward to working with Ron and everybody else to defeat crooked Joe Biden. We will have to get him up. We have to go get him up,” said former US president Donald Trump. On the other hand, Nikki Haley remains confident in her candidacy, wishing DeSantis well and emphasizing the importance of allowing the best candidate, regardless of gender, to win. “He’s been a good governor, and we wish him well. Having said that, it’s now one fella and one lady left. And what the people of New Hampshire know, is when we win the presidency in this country, I will do everything I can to prove to you that you made the right decision. But, for now, I’ll leave you with this: may the best woman win,” said Haley. The upcoming New Hampshire primary looms large, with Trump holding a significant lead in the polls. DeSantis, who faced challenges such as a lacklustre debate performance and a notable fundraising deficit compared to Trump, ultimately concluded that continuing the fight would be futile. Despite DeSantis’s exit, questions linger about his future political ambitions. At 45 years old, he has a long career ahead and may be positioning himself for a role within the Trump administration or even as a potential successor to Trump’s voter base. As the focus shifts to New Hampshire, the contest between Trump and Haley intensifies. If Haley can hold her ground, the race may prolong, but if not, Trump could secure victory sooner than anticipated. The outcome of the New Hampshire primary will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the Republican presidential race.
