Vantage | Why Ram Temple in Ayodhya is about emotions but also big numbers

It was a momentous day in India as all eyes turned to the city of Ayodhya for the consecration ceremony of the new Ram Temple on 22 January. The event, steeped in colour, religion and pomp drew attention from across the nation and beyond. Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ceremony marked the fulfillment of a longstanding demand to build a temple at the birthplace of Lord Ram.

With over 7,000 guests in attendance, the event saw the presence of renowned actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth, Ranbir Kapoor, Ram Charan, Chiranjeevi, Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif. The star-studded gathering also included sports icons like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, and Saina Nehwal along with top businessmen like Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Sunil Bharti Mittal and Sajjan Jindal. The grand unveiling The ceremony, commencing after 12 pm, featured Prime Minister Modi unveiling the 4.3-foot-tall, 200-kilogram idol of Lord Ram, carved from a single black stone. The subsequent consecration involved religious rituals believed to imbibe the idol with divine powers. Hosting such a colossal event required meticulous planning and execution. Over 13,000 security personnel were deployed, 10,000 CCTV cameras were installed and the entire city was transformed into a fortress. Ayodhya’s airport witnessed over 100 flights in two days, including 40 chartered planes, while hotels experienced a surge in demand with room rates reaching up to Rs 1 lakh. Estimates suggest that between 300,000 and 500,000 visitors attended the ceremony creating a challenge for the authorities. The coming days are expected to witness a continuous influx as the temple opens for worship, with projections of over 100,000 pilgrims per day. The consecration ceremony featured traditional Indian instruments playing in the background, while outside, Indian Air Force helicopters showered flower petals over the temple premises. Prime Minister Modi’s message linked the Ram Temple to India’s narrative of growth, prosperity and strength. Future plans Although the temple’s construction aims for completion by the year-end, the pilgrimage is set to continue. Ambitious plans include transforming Ayodhya into a global Hindu pilgrimage centre akin to the Vatican or Mecca. The expected cost of the temple is Rs1,800 crore with donations being the primary source of funding. The temple complex, covering 2.7 acres, is just a part of Ayodhya’s transformation. The city has witnessed the inauguration of a new airport (costing Rs1,450 crore), railway station upgrades (Rs240 crore), and a massive township project (Rs2,200 crore) to attract new residents. The state government anticipates a significant boost in tax revenue, estimating around Rs25,000 crore due to the temple. This economic impact, coupled with the city’s enhanced infrastructure, positions Ayodhya as a potential economic powerhouse. The grandeur of the event transcended national borders, with celebrations witnessed worldwide. From Tesla light shows in the US to rallies in France and Taiwan, the unveiling of the Ram Temple was truly a global event, reinforcing its significance on the world stage. The consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya was not just a religious ceremony. It was a spectacle of grand proportions, drawing attention globally. As Ayodhya embarks on a new era, the temple’s potential to transform the city economically and culturally is evident leaving an indelible mark on India’s history.
