Vantage | Why Israel accuses Western media of collaborating with Hamas

In the midst of escalating conflicts, the role of the press, particularly the western media, is facing intense scrutiny with Israel singling out prominent platforms such as CNN, The New York Times, Reuters and AP. The Israeli government is posing tough questions, questioning the possible collaboration between these media outlets and Hamas, the group responsible for recent attacks on Israel.

Allegations and questions The Israeli government is particularly concerned about the proximity of journalists to Hamas during the attacks. Key questions have been raised, such as whether reporters were embedded with Hamas, had prior knowledge of the attacks, were tipped off by Hamas terrorists and were cooperating with them. Unveiling the controversial photos The basis for these serious allegations lies in photographs released by a media watchdog in Israel, Honest Reporting. One such photo from the 7 October attacks depicts a burning tank belonging to the Israeli forces near the Israel-Gaza border inside Israeli territory. The Associated Press (AP) was on-site, seemingly close enough to capture a close-up of the unfolding events. Journalists or collaborators? A freelance journalist from Gaza, Hassan Eslaiah, affiliated with CNN and AP, was present at the scene of the Hamas attack. There’s an unverified video suggesting that Eslaiah went live during the attacks. Furthermore, Eslaiah is alleged to have connections with a prominent Hamas leader, raising concerns about the possible collaboration between journalists and the attackers. Other journalists including Yousef Masoud, Ali Mahmud and Hatem Ali were also present capturing photos allegedly depicting Hamas terrorists kidnapping Israelis. The timing and nature of these images raise questions about how these journalists consistently found themselves at the right place and time during the attacks. Official response and statements Israel has officially raised the issue, with the Communication Minister reaching out to CNN, Reuters, The New York Times and AP. The gravity of the situation has prompted a call for a thorough response from individuals, journalists, institutions, unions and organisations worldwide. AP and Reuters have issued statements denying prior knowledge of the attacks. However, as of the latest update, The New York Times and CNN had not commented on the allegations. From chronicler to collaborator? The unfolding situation prompts a crucial question: at what point does journalism transition from being a chronicler to a collaborator? The ethical boundaries of journalism are under scrutiny, particularly when journalists may have witnessed and amplified a terrorist strike without taking any action. A call for humanity In the face of a potential massacre of innocent civilians, the narrative shifts to the responsibility of journalists to prioritize humanity over their role as chroniclers. The focus is on the need to act as responsible individuals first and journalists second when faced with such grave situations. The ongoing investigation into the actions of these media outlets and journalists raises critical ethical concerns, challenging the traditional role of the press in times of conflict.
