In recent days, Italy has been captivated by the conclusion of what is being hailed as the “Mafia Trial of the Century.” Over 200 individuals with ties to organised crime have been convicted marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against the mafia.
A familiar tale of crime and punishment The crimes that led to these convictions are a familiar list of underworld activities: extortion, bribery, drug trafficking and murder. However, this trial goes beyond the cliches of gangster epics. it delves into the heart of one of Italy’s most notorious criminal organisations – the ‘Ndrangheta. Cast of characters: From senators to mob bosses The individuals found guilty include prominent figures such as a former Italian senator, a former mayor, an ex-police chief and several leaders of the ‘Ndrangheta. The courtroom drama unfolded like a script from a crime thriller with senior mafiosos turning state witnesses, a mob boss’s nephew betraying the family and gangsters with colourful nicknames like “The Wolf” and “Lamb Thigh” among the accused. The trial, which took place in a literal bunker on the outskirts of the city of Lamezia Terme, lasted nearly three years. Judges presiding over the case had to endure police protection throughout the proceedings, emphasizing the gravity of the charges and the potential threats faced by those seeking justice. The verdict The cumulative sentence for the convicted individuals adds up to approximately 2,200 years. This landmark trial is expected to have a substantial impact on the ‘Ndrangheta’s operations, particularly in the realm of cocaine trafficking, where the organisation controls about 80 per cent of Europe’s market share. “Pittelli Giancarlo is judged guilty of the crimes ascribed to him under chapters A-bis, A-bis-1, A-bis-4. He is convicted to 11 years in prison,” said President of the court Brigida Cavasino. The roots of this trial can be traced back to 2019 when around 2,500 police officers descended upon Vibo Valentia, a stronghold of the ‘Ndrangheta in the Calabria region. The subsequent arrests revealed the deep-rooted and widespread influence of the criminal organisation, which had permeated various aspects of the province’s social and economic fabric. “The infiltration of the criminal organisation in the province of Vibo Valentia was so deep-rooted and so widespread, so alarming, so disturbing that I think it can be noted that there was no aspect of the life of the social economic fabric of the province that was not conditioned by the capacity of the force of intimidation of this so dangerous criminal organisation," said Vincenzo Capomolla, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Catanzaro Prosecutor’s Office. Fortified courtrooms and acquittals Despite the challenges faced during the trial, including the need for a fortified call centre turned makeshift bunker and the acquittal of about 100 suspects due to insufficient evidence, the verdict represents a significant victory for Italy. “Surely that cruel, violent and recurring part of the ‘Ndrangheta’, which has sown that sense of fear for decades, is hit. There is a strong message that civil society and especially those entrepreneurs and shop owners who are still being crushed by the ‘Ndrangheta’s stubbornness that they can trust the state. There is a need for us to make our own contribution through the power of reporting to the police. This is certainly the most important message coming out of this first instance verdict," said Giuseppe Borrello, regional representative of Anti-Mafia Association Libera in Calabria. Battle continues The ‘Ndrangheta, with an estimated annual turnover of $60 billion and operations spanning from South America to Australia, has faced a historic blow. However, the battle is far from over. This trial focused on one major ‘Ndrangheta family, the Mancuso clan of Vibo Valentia. Other top bosses are yet to face justice and the fight against organised crime in Italy continues. While celebrating this victory, Italy must remain vigilant and committed to dismantling the remaining power structures of the ‘Ndrangheta and other criminal organisations that threaten its society.
