The South China Sea has become a hotbed of escalating tensions as China continues to stir up trouble prompting regional powers to take a firm stance against its actions.

Growing confrontation Recent weeks have witnessed open confrontations between China and the Philippines with Beijing targeting ships from Manila. China has gone to the extent of blocking the movement of Philippine vessels, firing water cannons and even colliding with Filipino ships. These provocations, captured on camera, indicate a brazen approach by China with no signs of a change in its behaviour. Faced with such aggression, the Philippines has two options: to respond with force in a tit-for-tat manner or to adopt a more tactical approach. Recent developments suggest that Manila has chosen the latter option. Building presence in disputed waters The Philippines is strategically building assets in disputed waters, particularly in the South China Sea. One notable project is taking shape at the Second Thomas Shoal, a submerged reef located in the Spratly Islands. China claims ownership of this reef, but it has been under Philippine control for decades. Manila is strengthening its hold on the Second Thomas Shoal by constructing a permanent structure, a facility intended to serve as shelter for Philippine fishermen. The Philippines is allocating over a million dollars for this project, emphasizing its commitment to reinforcing its territorial claims in the face of China’s provocations. A significant aspect of Manila’s strategy is the presence of the B.R.P. Sierra Madre, a shipwreck marooned on the Second Thomas Shoal. Despite being a rusting piece of junk, this ship serves as a crucial military base, acting as a marker for Manila and an observation outpost for its marines. The Philippines deploys soldiers here to assert control over the island and protect its rights. China’s coercion and roadblocks In response to the Philippines’ assertiveness, China is creating roadblocks to impede resupply missions to the marines stationed on the shipwreck. The Chinese navy has actively blocked shipments of food and supplies causing concern about the well-being of the Filipino soldiers. China has also increased its patrols in the region installing a floating barrier to prevent Philippine ships from approaching. The tensions between the Philippines and China are reaching a critical point. Chinese officials have warned against Philippine provocations and harassment emphasizing their commitment to resolving differences through dialogue. The Philippines, on the other hand, remains steadfast in its assertion of rights based on the Philippine constitution and international law. In response to the escalating tensions, the Philippines is mobilising international allies and conducting joint military drills. Collaborative efforts with the United States, India and other partners aim to strengthen the Philippines’ position in the South China Sea. Despite objections from Beijing, Manila is resolute in confronting China head-on. As the South China Sea becomes a focal point of geopolitical tensions, the Philippines stands firm against China’s aggressive actions. The construction of permanent structures, strategic military presence and international alliances underscore Manila’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity and standing up to Chinese coercion. The situation remains fluid and the international community watches closely as tensions in the region continue to rise. Views expressed in the above piece are personal and solely that of the author.
