In recent news from Africa, particularly Nigeria, the spotlight once again falls on Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who finds himself embroiled in allegations of nepotism and controversy. The latest uproar stems from Tinubu’s recent shake-up within Nigeria’s Federal Housing Authority, raising questions about his choices and their qualifications.

Allegations of nepotism

Tinubu appointed Oye-Tunde Ojo, a former Nigerian MP with a stint in the oil and gas sector, as the new MD/CEO of the Federal Housing Authority. Despite Ojo’s reported experience in housing and hospitality industries, doubts linger about the timing of his supposed decade-long expertise in housing, especially given his recent ventures. Moreover, Ojo’s marital ties to Fola-Sha-De Tinubu, the president’s daughter, only serve to fuel allegations of nepotism, tarnishing the optics of Tinubu’s administration.

This isn’t Tinubu’s first brush with controversy since assuming office. Previously, his administration was embroiled in a dispute over an offshore oil block called OPL 245, involving European oil giants Eni and Shell. Despite corruption allegations and legal battles, Tinubu unexpectedly resolved the matter, prompting speculation about possible ulterior motives, particularly given Eni’s recent dealings in Nigeria.

Eni’s sale of its Nigerian onshore assets to local firm Oando PLC, headed by Adewale Tinubu, Bola Tinubu’s nephew, adds another layer to the controversy. The apparent coincidence of a European oil company benefiting the president’s family raises eyebrows, especially when juxtaposed with Nigeria dropping litigation against Eni shortly after the deal. Such incidents only add weight to accusations of nepotism and corruption swirling around Tinubu’s presidency.

Flourishing corruption

Furthermore, Tinubu has faced allegations of using his office for personal gain, epitomised by the scandal surrounding a proposed presidential yacht worth billions of Naira. In a country grappling with wealth inequality and economic challenges, the revelation sparked outrage among Nigerians and opposition lawmakers. The subsequent diversion of funds earmarked for the yacht to a student loan fund did little to quell public anger, especially after the luxury boat had already been delivered.

These controversies represent just the tip of the iceberg in Tinubu’s tumultuous tenure. From allegations of nepotism to personal enrichment scandals, his presidency has been marred by one controversy after another. As Nigeria navigates these turbulent waters, the hope remains that the nation will continue to progress despite the extravagance of its president and the enrichment of his family. However, unless addressed decisively, such controversies threaten to undermine public trust and confidence in Nigeria’s leadership.
