Vantage | Are American voters and Democrats giving up on Biden?

In the midst of the upcoming election year, President Joe Biden’s relationship with American voters appears to be in jeopardy. Recent opinion polls reveal a challenging path to re-election with former president Donald Trump leading in most battleground states. Polling predicament A series of recent opinion polls conducted in six battleground states shed light on the challenges President Biden faces. In five of these states, Donald Trump emerges as the more popular choice, signalling a significant shift in American politics. The dynamics have changed since Biden’s 2020 victory when voters sought to oust Trump. Now, it seems they are considering doing the same to Biden. Call for Biden to reconsider Some voters, albeit politely, are urging President Biden to reconsider his candidacy for the 2024 election. The call for a younger, more rallying figure to take the reins is becoming increasingly vocal. While Biden secured victory in 2020 as the antidote to the Trump era, the landscape has shifted and many believe it’s time for new leadership. Economic woes One of the most significant factors impacting Biden’s popularity is the state of the American economy. Citizens find themselves financially squeezed each month with lifetime savings at a record low and credit card debt at an all-time high. While the US may not be in a recession, the prevailing sentiment is far from positive. Biden’s controversial policy decisions President Biden’s foreign policy decisions have also ignited division among the American electorate. His tenure has witnessed two significant conflicts, one in Ukraine and another in Gaza. The handling of these crises has resulted in a divided populace with differing views on supporting Ukraine and Israel. Some Americans want the US to cease funding Ukraine, while others advocate for an end to backing Israel. These differences underscore the challenges faced by President Biden in maintaining consensus on international matters. Amidst these challenges, young demonstrators express their frustration, calling for Biden to listen to their concerns. They emphasize the importance of freedom of speech and the need for the president to heed diverse opinions. “He’s just turning a blind eye on everything and he’s only listening to the opinions that he likes. But I think, as an American, we have freedom of speech and we can say whatever we want to. And he should listen as the president of the United States," said Sara, an 11-year-old demonstrator. Another demonstrator Chiraz said, “Enough is enough. It can’t go on. And we need the White House, we need Biden to listen, because you can hear out here. Everyone is out here, we’re all here for one reason: the killing of innocent people needs to end.” Biden team’s response President Biden’s team remains in denial mode emphasizing that much can change in the year leading up to the election. They assert that Biden’s resolve to run is firm. However, the increasing number of voters who express discontent poses a significant dilemma. The 2024 election is shaping up to be a rematch of the 2020 race with Joe Biden as the incumbent president. His approval ratings stand at a mere 37 per cent and his age remains a point of concern. The Trump factor On the opposing side stands former president Donald Trump, who is facing 91 felony charges and multiple criminal allegations. Nonetheless, Trump remains the favoured choice within the Republican Party and his popularity appears to overshadow his legal challenges. Trump’s comparison to Nelson Mandela Trump himself draws comparisons to Nelson Mandela, claiming he is fighting to save the country from perceived threats, both domestic and foreign. “I don’t mind being Nelson Mandela because I’m doing it for a reason. I’m doing it for a reason. I’m doing it for a reason. We got to save our country from these fascists, these lunatics that we’re dealing with. They’re horrible people and they’re destroying our country. I talk about threats from within and threats from outside,” the former president said. Unwanted rematch With 170 million voters, America faces the disheartening choice of two elderly Caucasian men in this unforeseen rematch. It’s a political scenario that few anticipated but one that America is now confronting. As the nation gears up for the impending elections, the stakes have never been higher. Many have labelled this as the most consequential election since Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860. The world’s first democracy finds itself facing a challenging decision that will significantly shape its future. The dynamics have shifted since Biden’s 2020 victory with economic woes, policy decisions and a call for fresh leadership contributing to the uncertainty. In a high-stakes election year, the nation faces a challenging decision with far-reaching consequences. Views expressed in the above piece are personal and solely that of the author.
