Five incredible (self-destructive) achievements by Justin Trudeau

Diplomacy is hard. One has to delicately navigate through tight spaces, negotiate at mutually beneficial terms and carefully choose words to utter at the exact right moment. Diplomacy comes naturally to some leaders, who take it upon themselves to make their country stand out at the world stage; however, there are certain leaders who are masters of miscalculation, architects of error and lords of oversight, fumbling their way through the delicate dance of foreign relations. In the latter category stands none other than Canada’s very own Justin Trudeau, the man who is breaking records on the shortest time it takes to completely wreck a nation’s foreign policy. The world watched in awe as he stood in the Canadian House of Commons and attacked an important geo-political ally, India, over “credible allegations” of it being accomplice in the killing of a convicted terrorist on Canadian soil. As linguistic experts and lexicographers all over the world got busy in searching for the definition of “credible allegations”, the explosive revelation came that he only made that announcement in haste so that the media does not report it before his announcement, making him appear weak and passive. Ironically, it did just that. As Justin Trudeau is dropping gems of geo-political wisdom faster than any of us can possibly gather, the moment is just about right to look at the five incredible (self-destructive) steps by the Canadian Prime Minister: 1. Trust me bro, I googled it One would imagine that leveraging such serious charges against a person, let alone a nation, would require concrete evidence beyond ambiguity. Rightfully so, the agencies in both Canada and India started demanding the “credible allegations” to be made public. Enters David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, who reveals that the only briefings that he has been able to receive in this regard were open source briefings, which is information that’s available to the public doing an internet search. “I find it frustrating”, he adds, which resonates with the majority of stakeholders observing the situation. He added that Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc had reached out, “but there has not been good information sharing.” In other words, Justin Trudeau jeopardised India-Canada relations over a Google search. 2. Inviting a convicted terrorist to a diplomatic dinner in Delhi It might be easy to assume that Justin Trudeau’s G20 visit to India was a disaster fraught with humiliation. However, this was just one of the many instances of his trips to India that have been marred by embarrassment. This particular visit falls second only to his 2018 excursion when the Canadian high commissioner extended an invitation to a Sikh extremist named Jaspal Atwal, a convicted individual with a history of attempted murder and ties to a terrorist organisation. Atwal was found guilty of attempting to assassinate an Indian minister back in 1986 and was also implicated in an attack on Ujjal Dosanjh, the former premier of British Columbia. By the time Atwal’s invitation was revoked, a move that Trudeau termed “unfortunate,” Atwal had already taken photographs with Trudeau’s wife, Sophie, in Mumbai, as well as with other members of Trudeau’s entourage. Another Canadian businessman and a member of a Sikh organisation with links to the Khalistan movement, Paramjit Randhawa, had also reportedly arrived in India as a member of the Trudeau delegation. And all of this happened a day after Justin Trudeau had assured Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh that Canada didn’t support any separatist movement. 3. Throwing out Ramesh Sangha for criticising Khalistani elements in the Liberal Party Ah, the heartwarming love story between Justin Trudeau and Khalistani elements is truly a modern-day romance for the ages. It’s a love so deep that even the slightest criticism of the latter can set off an eruption of outrage from the former. Take, for instance, the case of Ramesh Sangha, the audacious Sikh MP from the Toronto area who had the audacity to criticise fellow MP Navdeep Bains, implying that Bains might just have a soft spot for extremist views and a penchant for all things Khalistan. But fear not, for our beloved Prime Minister Justin Trudeau swiftly swung into action. Upon catching wind of Sangha’s “baseless and dangerous accusations” against Bains, Trudeau’s Liberal Party promptly ejected Ramesh Sangha, the Indo-Canadian MP who represents the Brampton Centre constituency in Toronto’s suburbs. Such swift justice for anyone daring to question the Khalistani allegiance within the Liberal Party! Let us not forget that Sangha, a former Indian Air Force officer hailing from Punjab, had the gall to accuse his own party in 2019 of cosying up to Khalistani separatists, thereby jeopardising relations with India. Of course, Trudeau, in his infinite wisdom, vehemently denied any such support for separatists within his party. Who would ever question that? 4. Cancelling trade talks with the world’s fifth largest economy, signing FTA with the war-torn Ukraine Justin Trudeau, the virtuoso of diplomatic finesse, has treated us to yet another remarkable display of his strategic brilliance. First, he abruptly cancelled trade talks with India, the world’s fifth-largest economy. Because, why not? But fret not, for Trudeau swiftly shifted his attention to Ukraine, a nation ravaged by conflict. During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada, Trudeau proudly signed an updated Free Trade Agreement and several other bilateral agreements. In his characteristic style, Trudeau claimed that this modernised FTA with war-torn Ukraine would open doors for Canadian businesses to engage in Ukraine’s economic recovery. After all, when trade negotiations with the world’s fifth-largest economy hit a snag, the logical solution is to pivot to a war-torn nation for high-quality market access. Oh, and let’s not forget the delightful twist in the tale: Trudeau had halted trade negotiations with India even before accusing them of foul play. The reason? Vague “disagreements on certain issues.” Naturally, Canada’s priorities are crystal clear. And why not cap it all off by cancelling a trade mission to India, citing India’s concerns about growing Khalistani activities in Canada as the reason? 5. Honouring a Nazi on the floor of House of Commons What happened at the Canadian House of Commons completely defied common sense at all levels. In a move that left everyone scratching their heads, Justin Trudeau decided to honour a “literal” Nazi in the hallowed halls of the Canadian House of Commons. Yes, you read that right. Trudeau personally met with and bestowed honours upon a veteran of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a division that was, well, a Nazi division. But why stop there? The Liberals even arranged for this Nazi veteran to receive recognition on the floor of the House of Commons during a visit by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The speaker of Canada’s parliament, Anthony Rota, also hailed this Nazi veteran as “a Ukrainian Canadian war hero who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians”. A standing ovation followed, naturally. Conservative leader Poilievre pointed out that no parliamentarians, except for Trudeau himself, had the opportunity to vet this individual’s dark past before he was introduced and honoured in the House of Commons. But who needs context or warning when you can surprise your fellow parliamentarians with an unexpected Nazi tribute? It’s truly fascinating to observe the selective amnesia that seems to grip the majority of Justin Trudeau’s fan club also. These are the folks who, at the slightest disagreement, don’t hesitate to label anyone and everyone as a Nazi, never missing an opportunity to liken their opponents to Hitler himself. But here’s where it gets intriguing. When their beloved Trudeau decides to honour an actual Nazi right there in the House of Commons, you’d expect them to raise a cacophony of objections, right? Well, think again. The silence emanating from this fan club is nothing short of deafening. It’s almost as if their “Nazi” radar malfunctions when it comes to Trudeau’s actions. After all, consistency is not-so-common, especially when it comes to political adoration. In conclusion, making unfounded claims without concrete evidence, Trudeau not only strained India-Canada relations but also undermined Canada’s credibility on the global stage. Canada would need to opt for better leaders if it wants to be taken seriously by the international community. The writer takes special interest in history, culture and geopolitics.
