Exclusive | Ground report from UAE's first Hindu stone temple

In the vast deserts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, amidst the typical sights of sand dunes, camels and palm trees, an unexpected marvel is taking shape. Imagine a sprawling Hindu temple, standing at an impressive 108 feet tall – the BAPS Hindu Mandir. Located just outside Abu Dhabi, this stone temple not only marks the first of its kind in the country but is also set to be the largest in West Asia. With an estimated cost of Rs700 crore, this architectural masterpiece raises questions about its builders, the acceptance of its construction by the ruling authorities and the unique story behind its existence.

The unveiling Venturing 50 kilometres outside Abu Dhabi, the landscape gradually transforms from an urban jungle to a rugged desert. Amidst the scaffolding, bustling workers and dedicated artisans, the identity of the structure becomes evident -– a Hindu temple. However, not just any temple; the BAPS Hindu Mandir is poised to be the biggest in the country. As we explore this remarkable site, we delve into the intriguing tale of its inception. The genesis In 2015, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE, the Emirati president generously gifted 17 acres of land on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway. Two years later, the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi himself. The construction, a testament to the harmony between two civilisations and governments, has been underway since then, with an expected inauguration in February of the following year. Many intricate carvings and statues were crafted by artisans in India and transported to the site, a logistical feat in itself. The temple, standing at 108 feet tall, requires around 40 thousand cubic metres of marble, 180 thousand cubic metres of sandstone and an immense amount of labour – approximately 4,00,000 man-hours expended until now.

While the design and artistry are distinctly Indian, the temple also pays homage to its location in the UAE. Seven spires, each representing an emirate in the UAE including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, embody a cultural exchange and intermingling. It symbolises the rich history of cultural ties between India and the Arab world. Builders and purpose The Hindu sect behind this grand endeavour is BAPS, the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha. Known for their worship of Swaminarayan as an avatar of Krishna, BAPS has constructed over 1,100 Hindu temples globally, including notable landmarks such as Akshardham in New Delhi and the recently inaugurated temple in New Jersey, the largest Hindu temple outside Asia. Beyond places of worship, these temples serve as community hubs, fostering education, exhibitions and recreational spaces. For the Indian community in the UAE, comprising around 30 per cent of the population, this temple is a source of pride. While smaller temples existed for prayers, the BAPS Hindu Mandir goes beyond, providing a sprawling complex that welcomes and integrates the community into the cultural fabric of the UAE. Termed the “Festival of Harmony,” the celebration is set to commence on 10 February, featuring the active participation of the local Indian community and culminating in a grand two-hour-long ceremony on 15 February. At first glance, the BAPS Hindu Mandir may seem like an anomaly in the desert landscape, but as one delves into its backstory and mission, its presence becomes a symbol of cooperation and harmony. Standing as a testament to the unity between two distinct countries and cultures, this grand temple emerges not only as an architectural marvel but as a beacon of cultural fusion in the heart of the UAE’s expansive deserts.
