India’s identity transcends simplistic labels of Hinduism and Bharat, embracing a rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and traditions. It stands as a global exemplar, showcasing how nations worldwide can reconnect with their heritage while contributing to the international order. Rather than posing a challenge to existing structures, India is actively revitalising them, paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic global community.
The nation is currently experiencing a remarkable surge in growth and influence. Those hesitant to acknowledge India’s ascent should take a moment for introspection. It became undeniably clear to me during my recent attendance at a series of international conferences in New Delhi, notably the Raisina Dialogue, organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
One of India’s most striking qualities is its genuine humility, evident in its willingness to share the stage with others. By uplifting nations and amplifying the voices of the marginalised, India wields a potent tool of statecraft and diplomacy. Whether through initiatives to empower the Global South or leadership in the Quad partnership for security, India is driving real change on the world stage.
The Raisina Dialogue 2024 underscored a celebration of enduring alliances and burgeoning friendships. India highlighted its ties with Greece, Africa, and Armenia, while also honouring partnerships with the broader global community. Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron’s efforts to strengthen European-Indian ties were omnipresent. France’s role in fostering these relations, evident in growing India-France collaborations, serves as a model for broader European engagement with India, promising mutual benefits for all parties involved.
The atmosphere at the conference was electric, characterised by a sense of jubilation and growing confidence. When External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his colleagues took the stage, it wasn’t just the Indian audience but also foreign diplomats, policy experts, and leaders who contributed to the vibrant discourse. The enthusiasm was infectious, with even distinguished diplomats and foreign leaders briefly losing their composures as they were momentarily swept up in the fervour.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsIndia’s dynamism extends beyond its borders, influencing its allies to embrace their own rich heritages. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationalist stance has drawn criticism at home and abroad, his administration has fostered flourishing relationships in the Muslim world. Informal discussions with Saudi officials at the Raisina Dialogue highlighted the potential for joint India-Saudi think tanks, signalling a strategic alignment in the changing dynamics of the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is also playing a pivotal role in fostering lasting partnerships between Muslims and Hindus too, exemplifying the potential for mutual understanding and collaboration. Bangladesh, India’s Muslim-majority neighbour, is also benefitting from its enhanced partnership with Bharat. A model for the region.
Despite these significant developments, India’s trajectory often receives insufficient attention in the Western press. As the world increasingly turns to India for solutions and leadership, it’s evident that the nation has firmly established itself on the global stage. Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott’s assertion at the TV9 Network’s WITT: Global Summit rings true: “India will be a democratic superpower.” Indeed, India’s trajectory aligns with this prophecy, offering a beacon of fresh leadership in a world hungry for visionary direction.
In conclusion, India’s wielding of ‘smart power’ represents a transformative force in global affairs. Its embrace of diversity, humility in leadership, and commitment to inclusive partnerships position it as a model for nations seeking to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. As India continues to rise, its influence will only grow, shaping the future of a new global order for the century to come.
