Families from disadvantaged backgrounds receive RS 51,000/- for the wedding expenses of daughters. Now in its 17th year (barring the Covid years), this scheme has been transformative and has impacted lakhs of lives. Another condition for availing of this scheme is to ensure that the age of the bride should be 18 years and that of the groom – 21 years of age. Apart from this if there are at least 5 couples willing to be wed at one time, the government will arrange for a samuhik vivah, further reducing costs. Another heart-touching initiative is the “Kanyadan Yojana”, which alleviates the financial burden associated with weddings for economically disadvantaged families. He recognised that the burden of a girl child’s marriage expenses often leads to regressive practices like female infanticide, and he aimed to address this issue through financial support.
