Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day festivities of Diwali. It is considered to be an auspicious day to buy new metal items, especially those made of gold and silver. The day is solely dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) and Lord Kuber (the god of wealth). According to Drik Panchang, Dhanteras will be celebrated on 22 October (Saturday) this year. The puja muhurat is from 07:01 pm to 08:17 pm. The idea of buying jewellery on Dhanteras comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Dhan’ meaning wealth, and ‘Teras’ means thirteen. As per the Hindu calendar, Dhantrayodashi is observed during the 13th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik.
