Ayurveda, a natural system of medicine, was founded in India more than 3,000 years ago. The term Ayurveda consists of two Sanskrit words including ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda means knowledge of life. Ayurveda is based on the principles of balancing different kinds of energies within your body to improve health. It promotes a healthy balance between mind and body. Unlike many other diets, the Ayurvedic diet gives personalised recommendations about the foods to eat and avoid on the basis of a person’s body type. Here is what you need to know more today on the occasion of Ayurveda Day, 23 October. What are doshas? It is believed that every person is made up of five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water, and earth. They combine in the human body to form three life energies, called doshas. There are three types of Doshas: Pitta (fire + water): This energy regulates your digestion and metabolism. Metabolism determines how well you break down foods and the hormones that are linked to your appetite. Vata (air + space): Those who practice Ayurveda believe that it is the most powerful of all three doshas. It controls our very basic body functions, like how cells function. It even controls your mind, heart function, blood flow, breathing, and ability to get rid of waste through your intestines. Kapha (earth + water): This life force controls your muscle growth, stability, immune system, body strength, and weight. You may disrupt it by sleeping during the day, eating many sweet foods, and eating or drinking things that are high in salt and water. What is the basis of ayurvedic treatment? The concepts of universal interconnectedness, life forces (doshas), and the body’s constitution (prakriti), form the primary basis of ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic treatment helps a person by removing impurities, increasing resistance to diseases and creating harmony between mind and body. Herbs and other plants like oils and common spices, are very commonly used in the Ayurvedic treatment.
