Ayurveda means the ‘science of life and longevity.’ It is among the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness are based on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It aims to promote good health more than fighting a disease. Over a period of time, some of the scholars in Ayurveda, through an in-depth study of the human body’s inner functioning and the study of different herbs and their benefits, have created different effective therapies that target and treat different health issues. On the occasion of Ayurveda Day, 23 October, let’s have a look at some of such Ayurvedic therapies: 1. Vamanan: The Vamanan or medically-induced vomiting focuses on the respiratory system and the upper gastro-intestinal tract and it is beneficial for those with respiratory and sinus issues. In Vamanan, a person is given a herbal mixture that stimulates the stomach lining and leads to vomiting. This helps to eliminate toxins from the respiratory and digestive tract. The vomiting then stops as the medicine is cleared out from the body. Vamanan therapy can act as a resolution for all kapha and skin diseases like Leucoderma. 2. Snehavasthy: Our body’s small and large intestines have an integral task of processing the foods that we consume, in addition to the stomach, and eventually preparing them for release from the body through the process of defecation. Gradually, due to constant wear and tear, accumulating waste leads to ineffective functioning of the intestines. In Snehavasthy medicated oil is used to clean the intestines, expelling waste and toxins and oiling them for proper functioning. 3. Uzhichil: Ayurveda advises this therapy to be done as a daily ritual. Uzhichil, also known as Abhyanga, is an extremely beneficial oil massage, where large quantities of oil infused with herbs are used to carry out a deep massage, done by one or even two masseurs. The herbs are spread throughout the body during the massage and are absorbed by the skin, while the powerful strokes stimulate blood circulation. 4. Tharpanam: This therapy helps to deal with an increased amount of screen time. A medicated ghee is applied on areas around the eyes, which when applied around the eyes helps to deal with increased screen time. 5. Thalapothichil: This is a remedy for acute stress, sleeplessness, and anxiety. It also helps us to deal with hair loss.
