Barbie’s long-time companion, Ken, has hit a major milestone - and with it comes a long-kept secret. As the iconic doll marks 65 years since his debut, toy giant Mattel has officially revealed Ken’s full name for the first time: Kenneth Sean Carson.
Ken was introduced in 1961, two years after Barbie made her debut, quickly becoming one of the most recognizable male dolls in the world.
While some online claims suggested Ken was celebrating 75 years, Mattel has clarified that the anniversary marks 65 years of Ken’s presence in pop culture.
A name with family roots
The newly revealed name carries sentimental value. Ken was originally named after Kenneth Handler, the son of Mattel founders Ruth and Elliot Handler - just as Barbie was named after their daughter, Barbara.
The addition of “Sean Carson” completes a character identity that fans have speculated about for decades.
More than Barbie’s boyfriend
Over the past six and a half decades, Ken has evolved far beyond the role of “Barbie’s boyfriend.”
He has appeared in numerous professions - from doctor and pilot to fashion model - and has undergone multiple redesigns reflecting changing fashion trends and cultural values.
Ken’s popularity surged again following the 2023 blockbuster Barbie movie, where actor Ryan Gosling’s portrayal brought fresh attention, humor, and cultural relevance to the character, especially among adult audiences.
A lasting cultural icon
Mattel’s decision to reveal Ken’s full name is part of a broader effort to celebrate the doll’s legacy and deepen fan engagement.
While Barbie has often been at the center of the brand’s storytelling, Ken’s enduring presence highlights his role as a cultural icon in his own right.
