“All I can say is that investigate this matter at the earliest and hold the trial in a fast track court,” says Nikhat Parween, 22-year-old wife of Indian engineer Fasih Mehmood, who according to the Delhi Police was detained on Monday at the airport following his extradition from Saudi Arabia. Mehmood is suspected to be a member of the Indian Mujahideen terror group and is allegedly involved in the Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy stadium blasts and Delhi’s Jama Masjid blasts. The deportation has happened at a time when the courts are closed (the Supreme Court is closed from 22 October to 27 October on account of Dussehra and Bakrid). I am concerned that since I cannot take any legal steps immediately my husband could be subjected to torture and be forced to sign statements,” says Parween, speaking to Firstpost on the telephone from Bihar. Having heard about Mehmood’s detention from media reports, Parween hit out the government for keeping the family in the dark. “This has become a pattern with investigative agencies. By not telling me about his whereabouts, they are mentally torturing me. Mehmood’s father is a heart patient. His mother is not well. If anything should happen to his family, the intelligence agencies and the government must answer." Parween maintains that the extradition is illegal and quotes a Saudi press report (published in June) that provided details of Mehmood’s deportation to India in May. Read the Arab news report here. Parween is expected to arrive in Delhi later this evening. “The family and lawyer should be allowed to meet him. If I am not allowed to meet him, I will be forced to hold a protest", she said.
Nikhat Parween, who had been fighting for news of her husband Fasih ever since he was picked up from their home in Saudia Arabia, asked why she was being kept in the dark about his deportation and custody.
