The Supreme Court has slammed Italian envoy Daniele Mancini, saying that they had no trust in him anymore, and prohibiting him from leaving India till further orders. Chief Justice Altamas Kabir had also slammed Mancini’s lawyers who had said that Mancini had no intention of leaving the country anyway. According to the Times Now channel Justice Kabir had said, “Stop acting so naive. We had trust in him, he broke that trust. What makes you think he will not leave?” [caption id=“attachment_665161” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] PTI[/caption] Mancini had told the court that he has complete immunity under the Vienna Convention, but the Chief Justice had said that given that Mancini had made an undertaking on behalf of the government of Italy and failed to uphold it, he had lost all right to diplomatic immunity. The livid Chief Justice had also asked, “What do they think our courts are?” The Supreme Court order also said all authorities shall take appropriate steps on the order restraining the Italian envoy from leaving the country. Earlier Minister of External Affairs, Salman Khurshid, had said that the government would comply with whatever the Supreme Court decreed. The failure of Italy to return two of its marines to India to face trial in the killing of two Indian fishermen has created massive outrage across the country, with the issue condemned by Parliament. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also said that Italy’s high handedness was “unacceptable” and warned of consequences if the marines were not returned to India. The Supreme Court fixed 2 April for further hearing of the case, adding that the marines still have time to come back by 22 March. With inputs from PTI
