Water level across major reservoirs in India rises to 61% of their storage capacity, 2% above average, says Centre

New Delhi: Water level in 91 major reservoirs across the country has risen to 61 percent of their total storage capacity from 59 percent last week, the government said on Friday. As of 14 September, the water storage was 92.51 billion cubic metres (BCM). It has now increased to 96.952 BCM. [caption id=“attachment_4070857” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Representational image. PTI[/caption] The latest water levels in the reservoirs are 88 percent of the storage reported during the corresponding period last year, the Union water resources ministry said in a statement. These are 82 percent of the decadal average for the corresponding period, the statement said. Reservoirs in states such as Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have reported lesser storage as against the previous year. Major dams in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Tripura, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have reported better storage level vis-à-vis the corresponding period last year.
