A 32 year old woman died and three others were injured when a vacant seven-storey building in Santa Cruz (East) in suburban Mumbai collapsed and fell on adjoining slum colony on Friday morning.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s disaster management centre, the building, New Shankar building, believed to have been constructed in the 1980s, is located in Kalina. The incident occurred around 11.30 am.
Sudha Sridharan, a ground floor resident of the building, was declared dead on arrival at the VN Desai Municipal Hospital in Santacruz.
Civic officials said three other people were also pulled out from the debris. “They have sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition in hospital,” said an official of the BMC, adding that the building had been declared dangerous and was vacated two years ago.
“The building was vacant but locals said that one or two residents were staying in the building nevertheless. A portion of the building fell on the nearby shanties and two families are feared to be trapped,” added the official.
The fire brigade and police department are currently carrying out rescue operations.
