Gulmarg: After the Siachen avalanche tragedy, where nine soldiers died on 3 February, the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) sent out instructors to train soldiers at high altitudes in rescue missions. Soldiers posted near the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg region, are properly trained to handle natural calamaties, said Major Varun Khujuria, an instructor at HAWS. They are given high altitude training as well as glacier training. These soldiers are also trained in using skiing equipment. A nine-week basic course, according to trainee Ajpal Singh, helps soldiers survive being deployed at higher altitudes and how to get acclimatized to living at 9,000 feet. ANI
