Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with warmth, ceremony and music on Wednesday as he touched down in Ghana’s capital, Accra, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the West African nation in over three decades.
Upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport, Modi was welcomed by a ceremonial guard of honour and a 21-gun salute. President John Dramani Mahama was on hand to receive him, underlining the significance Ghana places on the historic two-day visit.
Adding a cultural touch to the occasion, a group of Ghanaian children greeted the Indian leader with chants of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” a moment that visibly delighted the prime minister.

The ceremonial welcome continued at the hotel where Modi is staying, with a short musical performance staged in his honour. The prime minister watched with evident appreciation, smiling as the performers showcased local talent.
This is Modi’s first bilateral visit to Ghana, a country with which India shares warm historical relations and growing cooperation. Ghana is seen as an important partner for India in the Global South, with an influential role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a departure statement before the trip, the prime minister said he looked forward to “opening new avenues of cooperation in investment, energy, health, security, and development partnership.” He also called it a “great honour” to address Ghana’s Parliament, noting the democratic values that India and Ghana share.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi will hold talks with President Mahama to explore new areas of collaboration, especially in the fields of economic engagement, defence cooperation, and energy partnerships.
Ghana is the first stop on Modi’s latest multi-nation tour. After Accra, he will head to Trinidad and Tobago (July 3–4), Argentina (July 4–5), and Brazil for the 17th BRICS summit, before concluding the trip in Namibia.
The visit is expected to further deepen India’s engagement with key partners across continents.
