A public litigation from a businessman, Zoru Bhathena, has created a noise for the cause of the deteriorating state of Mumbai’s greenery. A resident of Mumbai, Khar West, Bhathena filed a petition demanding that municipal corporation take measures against the trees adversely affected by a pest called ‘Mealybug’

When Firstpost got the crusader to talk about what prompted him to file the PIL, Bhathena spoke about his research and showed us his extensive findings over the years on the green cover in Khar, residential area. . His PIL related work led the BMC to explicate the steps it has taken to save rain trees that are dying due to the bug infection.

Bhathena said that each time that he went to drop his children to school, he noticed that the trees that once shaded the roads, stood leafless with exposed branches to the sunlight. The barren landscape bothered him. The future, according to him is worrisome too as the bug is quickly spreading to the other trees. Before we have a environment bereft of trees, it is important that the concerned authorities take charge is his plea for a better future.
