A cloudburst triggered a deluge in Uttarakhand’s Kheer Ganga that is believed to have killed four people and damaged several properties. The Indian Army personnel have been deployed to the area for rescue and relief operations.

A cloudburst on Tuesday triggered a deluge in Uttarakhand’s Kheer Ganga that is believed to have killed at least four people.

Uttarkashi DM Prashant Arya said that huge amount of water came at tandem at Kheer Ganga due to a cloudburst. He said that while the exact situation is not yet clear, he said that he has been informed that there have been four deaths.

Arya further said that teams of the Public Works Department (PWD), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been rushed to the area.

The deluge that came down from the hills and struck Kheer Ganga was recorded on the camera. Watch the video below.

Several properties have been swept away in the deluge and many have suffered damage, officials told PTI.

Separately, the Central Command of the Indian Army said in a statement that personnel have reached the affected site to assess the situation and undertake rescue operations.

Explaining the situation, the Central Command said that a massive mudslide struck the Dharali village in the Kheer Gad area near Harsil, triggering sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement.

Amit Shah speaks to Uttarakhand CM, sends central personnel

Following the deluge, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and ordered seven rescue teams to assist in the recue and relief work.

“Spoke to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand regarding the flash flood in Dharali (Uttarkashi) to get information about the incident. Three ITBP teams, stationed nearby, have been sent to the spot while four NDRF teams have also been dispatched and they will reach soon and engage in rescue operations,” said Shah on X in Hindi.

Dharali is the main stopover on the way to Gangotri and has many hotels, restaurants, and homestays, and is popular among tourists.

Officials told PTI that a 16-member Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team has reached Dharali from its 12th battalion stationed at Matli in Uttarakhand while another unit has also been dispatched to the site.
